I was afraid of the fierce anger the LORD had directed against you, because he was about to destroy you. But again the LORD listened to me on that occasion.

I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me.

Jerusalem’s wall has been broken down, and its gates have been burned.”When I heard these words, I sat down and wept. I mourned for a number of days, fasting and praying before the God of the heavens.I said, LORD, the God of the heavens, the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps his gracious covenant with those who love him and keep his commands,let your eyes be open and your ears be attentive to hear your servant’s prayer that I now pray to you day and night for your servants, the Israelites. I confess the sins we have committed against you. Both I and my father’s family have sinned.We have acted corruptly toward you and have not kept the commands, statutes, and ordinances you gave your servant Moses.

Then I said,“ Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob survive since he is so small?”The LORD relented concerning this.“ This will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD.

“ I say to you, my friends, don’t fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more.But I will show you the one to fear: Fear him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear!

So he said he would have destroyed them— if Moses his chosen one had not stood before him in the breach to turn his wrath away from destroying them.

You provoked the LORD at Horeb, and he was angry enough with you to destroy you.
