He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

He took your pride away. He let you go hungry. Then he gave you manna to eat. You and your parents had never even known anything about manna before. He tested you to teach you that man doesn’t live only on bread. He also lives on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the LORD’s mouth.

以色列全會眾在曠野向摩西和亞倫發怨言。以色列人對他們說：「我們寧願在埃及地死在耶和華手中！那時我們坐在肉鍋旁，吃餅得飽。你們卻將我們領出來，到這曠野，要叫這全會眾都餓死啊！」

不可貪愛錢財，要以自己所有的為滿足，因為神曾說：「我絕不撇下你，也絕不丟棄你。」所以，我們可以勇敢地說：「主是我的幫助，我必不懼怕。人能把我怎麼樣呢？」

然而他卻吩咐天空，又敞開天上的門，降嗎哪像雨，給他們吃，將天上的糧食賜給他們。各人就吃大能者的食物；他賜下糧食，使他們飽足。

你們不要求吃甚麼，喝甚麼，也不要掛慮。這都是世上的外邦人所求的；你們需要這些東西，你們的父都知道。

並且都吃了一樣的靈糧，

你當倚靠耶和華而行善，安居地上，以他的信實為糧；

他們祈求，他就使鵪鶉飛來，並用天上的糧食使他們飽足。

「我已經聽見以色列人的怨言了。你要對他們說：『到黃昏的時候，你們要吃肉，早晨也必有食物得飽。你們就知道我是耶和華－你們的神。』」到了晚上，有鵪鶉上來，遮滿營地；早晨，營地周圍有一層露水。那一層露水蒸發之後，看哪，曠野的表面出現了小圓物，好像地上的薄霜一樣。以色列人看見了，不知道是甚麼，就彼此說：「這是甚麼？」摩西對他們說：「這是耶和華給你們吃的食物。耶和華所吩咐的是這樣：『你們每個人要按自己的食量收集，各人要為帳棚裏的人收集，按照人口數每個人一俄梅珥。』」以色列人就照樣去做；有的收多，有的收少。用俄梅珥量一量，多收的沒有餘，少收的也沒有缺；各人都按着自己的食量收集。摩西對他們說：「任何人都不可以把所收的留到早晨。」然而他們不聽從摩西，當中有人把食物留到早晨，食物就生蟲發臭了。摩西就向他們發怒。他們每日早晨按着各人的食量收集；太陽一發熱，食物就融化了。到第六天，他們收集了雙倍的食物，每個人二俄梅珥。會眾的官長來告訴摩西，摩西對他們說：「耶和華吩咐：『明天是安息日，是向耶和華守的聖安息日。你們要烤的就烤，要煮的就煮，所剩下的都留到早晨。』」他們就照摩西的吩咐把剩下的留到早晨，這些食物既不發臭，裏頭也沒有生蟲。摩西說：「你們今天就吃這些吧！因為今天是向耶和華守的安息日，你們在野外必找不着食物了。六天可以收集，第七天是安息日，這一天甚麼也沒有了。」第七天，百姓中有人出去收，甚麼也找不着。耶和華對摩西說：「你們不肯遵守我的誡令和教導，要到幾時呢？你們看，耶和華既然將安息日賜給你們，所以第六天他就賜給你們兩天的食物，第七天各人都要留在自己的地方，不許任何人從這裏出去。」於是百姓在第七天安息了。以色列家給這食物取名叫嗎哪，它的樣子像芫荽子，顏色是白的，吃起來像和蜜的薄餅。摩西說：「耶和華所吩咐的是這樣：『要裝滿一俄梅珥的嗎哪留給你們的後代，使他們可以看見我領你們出埃及地的時候，在曠野所給你們吃的食物。』」摩西對亞倫說：「你拿一個罐子，裝滿一俄梅珥的嗎哪，存在耶和華面前，留給你們的後代。」耶和華怎麼吩咐摩西，亞倫就照樣做，把嗎哪存留作見證。以色列人吃嗎哪共四十年，直到進入有人居住的地方；他們吃嗎哪，直到迦南地的邊境。

這些都仰望你按時給牠們食物。你給牠們，牠們就拾起來；你張手，牠們就飽得美食。你轉臉，牠們就驚惶；你收回牠們的氣，牠們就死亡，歸於塵土。
