It was not with our ancestors that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today.

He didn’t make it only with our people of long ago. He also made it with us. In fact, he made it with all of us who are alive here today.

“ All of you are standing today before the LORD your God— your leaders, tribes, elders, officials, all the men of Israel,your dependents, your wives, and the resident aliens in your camps who cut your wood and draw your water—so that you may enter into the covenant of the LORD your God, which he is making with you today, so that you may enter into his oathand so that he may establish you today as his people and he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you,but also with those who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God and with those who are not here today.

But I will confirm my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time next year.”

I will confirm my covenant that is between me and you and your future offspring throughout their generations. It is a permanent covenant to be your God and the God of your offspring after you.

For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see the things you see but didn’t see them, to hear the things you hear but didn’t hear them.

He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he ordained for a thousand generations—the covenant he made with Abraham, swore to Isaac,and confirmed to Jacob as a decree and to Israel as a permanent covenant:

But finding fault with his people, he says: See, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—not like the covenant that I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt. I showed no concern for them, says the Lord, because they did not continue in my covenant.

My point is this: The law, which came 430 years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously established by God and thus cancel the promise.For if the inheritance is based on the law, it is no longer based on the promise; but God has graciously given it to Abraham through the promise.Why, then, was the law given? It was added for the sake of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise was made would come. The law was put into effect through angels by means of a mediator.Now a mediator is not just for one person alone, but God is one.Is the law therefore contrary to God’s promises? Absolutely not! For if the law had been granted with the ability to give life, then righteousness would certainly be on the basis of the law.

They will be my people, and I will be their God.I will give them integrity of heart and action so that they will fear me always, for their good and for the good of their descendants after them.“ I will make a permanent covenant with them: I will never turn away from doing good to them, and I will put fear of me in their hearts so they will never again turn away from me.
