Moses said this about the tribe of Levi:“ O Lord, you have given your Thummim and Urim— the sacred lots— to your faithful servants the Levites. You put them to the test at Massah and struggled with them at the waters of Meribah.

Of Levi he said,“ Let Your Thummim and Your Urim belong to Your godly man, Whom You tested at Massah, With whom You contended at the waters of Meribah;

And of Levi he said:“ Let Your Thummim and Your Urim be with Your holy one, Whom You tested at Massah, And with whom You contended at the waters of Meribah,

And of Levi he said, Thy Thummim and thy Urim are with thy godly one, Whom thou didst prove at Massah, With whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;

And of Levi he said,[ Let] thy Thummim and thy Urim[ be] with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah,[ and with] whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;

Of Levi he said: Your Thummim and Urim belong to your godly one, whose authority you challenged at Massah, and with whom you argued at the waters of Meribah.

About Levi he said,“ Your Thummim and your Urim are with your godly one, whom you proved at Massah, with whom you contended at the waters of Meribah.

Moses named the place Massah( which means“ test”) and Meribah( which means“ arguing”) because the people of Israel argued with Moses and tested the Lord by saying,“ Is the Lord here with us or not?”

Insert the Urim and Thummim into the sacred chestpiece so they will be carried over Aaron’s heart when he goes into the Lord’s presence. In this way, Aaron will always carry over his heart the objects used to determine the Lord’s will for his people whenever he goes in before the Lord.

This place was known as the waters of Meribah( which means“ arguing”) because there the people of Israel argued with the Lord, and there he demonstrated his holiness among them.

Then Moses placed the chestpiece on Aaron and put the Urim and the Thummim inside it.

The people in the camp were jealous of Moses and envious of Aaron, the Lord’s holy priest.

When direction from the Lord is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim— one of the sacred lots cast before the Lord— to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.”

The governor told them not to eat the priests’ share of food from the sacrifices until a priest could consult the Lord about the matter by using the Urim and Thummim— the sacred lots.

Remember, only the priests and Levites on duty may enter the Temple of the Lord, for they are set apart as holy. The rest of the people must obey the Lord’s instructions and stay outside.

He asked the Lord what he should do, but the Lord refused to answer him, either by dreams or by sacred lots or by the prophets.

“ Priests may not marry a woman defiled by prostitution, and they may not marry a woman who is divorced from her husband, for the priests are set apart as holy to their God.

He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven.

“ Next make a medallion of pure gold, and engrave it like a seal with these words: Holy to the Lord.

The governor told them not to eat the priests’ share of food from the sacrifices until a priest could consult the Lord about the matter by using the Urim and Thummim— the sacred lots.

For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.

You cried to me in trouble, and I saved you; I answered out of the thundercloud and tested your faith when there was no water at Meribah. Interlude

“ Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open:

And I said to these priests,“ You and these treasures have been set apart as holy to the Lord. This silver and gold is a voluntary offering to the Lord, the God of our ancestors.

Then he said to Korah and his followers,“ Tomorrow morning the Lord will show us who belongs to him and who is holy. The Lord will allow only those whom he selects to enter his own presence.

He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good.

Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
