“ Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons will bow down to you.You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness— who dares to rouse him?The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.He will tether his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch; he will wash his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes. His eyes will be darker than wine, his teeth whiter than milk. After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord,“ Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?”The Lord answered,“ Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.”The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites,“ Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites went with them. When Judah attacked, the Lord gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek. It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites.Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes. Then Adoni-Bezek said,“ Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table.
