百姓离开帐棚要过约旦河的时候，抬约柜的祭司乃在百姓的前头。他们到了约旦河，脚一入水（原来约旦河水在收割的日子涨过两岸），那从上往下流的水便在极远之地、撒拉但旁的亚当城那里停住，立起成垒；那往亚拉巴的海，就是盐海，下流的水全然断绝。于是百姓在耶利哥的对面过去了。抬耶和华约柜的祭司在约旦河中的干地上站定，以色列众人都从干地上过去，直到国民尽都过了约旦河。

当日摩西就写了一篇歌，教导以色列人。耶和华嘱咐嫩的儿子约书亚说：“你当刚强壮胆，因为你必领以色列人进我所起誓应许他们的地；我必与你同在。”摩西将这律法的话写在书上，及至写完了，就吩咐抬耶和华约柜的利未人说：“将这律法书放在耶和华你们神的约柜旁，可以在那里见证以色列人的不是；

这一切灾祸临到我们身上是照摩西律法上所写的，我们却没有求耶和华我们神的恩典，使我们回头离开罪孽，明白你的真理。

“夫子，摩西为我们写着说：‘人若死了，撇下妻子，没有孩子，他兄弟当娶他的妻，为哥哥生子立后。’

“你们当记念我仆人摩西的律法，就是我在何烈山为以色列众人所吩咐他的律例典章。

摩西遵着耶和华的吩咐记载他们所行的路程，其路程乃是这样：

你们如果信摩西，也必信我，因为他书上有指着我写的话。

祭司的嘴里当存知识，人也当由他口中寻求律法，因为他是万军之耶和华的使者。

律法本是藉着摩西传的；恩典和真理都是由耶稣基督来的。

腓力找着拿但业，对他说：“摩西在律法上所写的和众先知所记的那一位，我们遇见了，就是约瑟的儿子拿撒勒人耶稣。”

那时大卫说：“除了利未人之外，无人可抬神的约柜；因为耶和华拣选他们抬神的约柜，且永远侍奉他。”

我的民因无知识而灭亡。你弃掉知识，我也必弃掉你，使你不再给我作祭司。你既忘了你神的律法，我也必忘记你的儿女。

你们要将你们支派的众长老和官长都招聚了来，我好将这些话说与他们听，并呼天唤地见证他们的不是。

他们说：“摩西许人写了休书便可以休妻。”耶稣说：“摩西因为你们的心硬，所以写这条例给你们；

对他们说：“你们是利未人的族长，你们和你们的弟兄应当自洁，好将耶和华以色列神的约柜抬到我所预备的地方。因你们先前没有抬这约柜，按定例求问耶和华我们的神，所以他刑罚我们。”于是祭司利未人自洁，好将耶和华以色列神的约柜抬上来。利未子孙就用杠，肩抬神的约柜，是照耶和华藉摩西所吩咐的。
