you must read this Book of Instruction to all the people of Israel when they assemble before the Lord your God at the place he chooses.

when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place he will choose, you shall read this law before them in their hearing.

That’s when all the Israelites come to appear in front of the Lord your God at the holy tent. It will be at the place he will choose. You must read this law to them.

Joshua then read to them all the blessings and curses Moses had written in the Book of Instruction.Every word of every command that Moses had ever given was read to the entire assembly of Israel, including the women and children and the foreigners who lived among them.

Rather, you must seek the Lord your God at the place of worship he himself will choose from among all the tribes— the place where his name will be honored.

“ Each year every man in Israel must celebrate these three festivals: the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Harvest, and the Festival of Shelters. On each of these occasions, all men must appear before the Lord your God at the place he chooses, but they must not appear before the Lord without a gift for him.All must give as they are able, according to the blessings given to them by the Lord your God.

For these laws of Moses have been preached in Jewish synagogues in every city on every Sabbath for many generations.”

On October 9 the family leaders of all the people, together with the priests and Levites, met with Ezra the scribe to go over the Law in greater detail.

all the people assembled with a unified purpose at the square just inside the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had given for Israel to obey.So on October 8 Ezra the priest brought the Book of the Law before the assembly, which included the men and women and all the children old enough to understand.He faced the square just inside the Water Gate from early morning until noon and read aloud to everyone who could understand. All the people listened closely to the Book of the Law.Ezra the scribe stood on a high wooden platform that had been made for the occasion. To his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah. To his left stood Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.Ezra stood on the platform in full view of all the people. When they saw him open the book, they all rose to their feet.Then Ezra praised the Lord, the great God, and all the people chanted,“ Amen! Amen!” as they lifted their hands. Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.The Levites— Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah— then instructed the people in the Law while everyone remained in their places.They read from the Book of the Law of God and clearly explained the meaning of what was being read, helping the people understand each passage.

After the usual readings from the books of Moses and the prophets, those in charge of the service sent them this message:“ Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, come and give it.”

I will drive out the other nations ahead of you and expand your territory, so no one will covet and conquer your land while you appear before the Lord your God three times each year.

They will continue to grow stronger, and each of them will appear before God in Jerusalem.

“ Second, celebrate the Festival of Harvest, when you bring me the first crops of your harvest.“ Finally, celebrate the Festival of the Final Harvest at the end of the harvest season, when you have harvested all the crops from your fields.At these three times each year, every man in Israel must appear before the Sovereign, the Lord.

They remained standing in place for three hours while the Book of the Law of the Lord their God was read aloud to them. Then for three more hours they confessed their sins and worshiped the Lord their God.

When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:

Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God on each of the seven days of the festival. Then on the eighth day they held a solemn assembly, as was required by law.
