But the Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy the nations living there, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua will lead you across the river, just as the Lord promised.

Then Moses called for Joshua, and as all Israel watched, he said to him,“ Be strong and courageous! For you will lead these people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors he would give them. You are the one who will divide it among them as their grants of land.

Instead, your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will lead the people into the land. Encourage him, for he will lead Israel as they take possession of it.

Then the Lord commissioned Joshua son of Nun with these words:“ Be strong and courageous, for you must bring the people of Israel into the land I swore to give them. I will be with you.”

The Lord replied,“ Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people.Transfer some of your authority to him so the whole community of Israel will obey him.When direction from the Lord is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim— one of the sacred lots cast before the Lord— to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.”So Moses did as the Lord commanded. He presented Joshua to Eleazar the priest and the whole community.Moses laid his hands on him and commissioned him to lead the people, just as the Lord had commanded through Moses.

Then David continued,“ Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the Lord is finished correctly.

Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come.

And I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate,that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

Years later, when Joshua led our ancestors in battle against the nations that God drove out of this land, the Tabernacle was taken with them into their new territory. And it stayed there until the time of King David.

“ And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.So take this seriously. The Lord has chosen you to build a Temple as his sanctuary. Be strong, and do the work.”

Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus.You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom:Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching.For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.They will reject the truth and chase after myths.But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near.

Then David sent for his son Solomon and instructed him to build a Temple for the Lord, the God of Israel.

The Lord told Joshua,“ Today I will begin to make you a great leader in the eyes of all the Israelites. They will know that I am with you, just as I was with Moses.Give this command to the priests who carry the Ark of the Covenant:‘ When you reach the banks of the Jordan River, take a few steps into the river and stop there.’”So Joshua told the Israelites,“ Come and listen to what the Lord your God says.Today you will know that the living God is among you. He will surely drive out the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites ahead of you.Look, the Ark of the Covenant, which belongs to the Lord of the whole earth, will lead you across the Jordan River!Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.The priests will carry the Ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth. As soon as their feet touch the water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river will stand up like a wall.”So the people left their camp to cross the Jordan, and the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Covenant went ahead of them.It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge,the water above that point began backing up a great distance away at a town called Adam, which is near Zarethan. And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was dry. Then all the people crossed over near the town of Jericho.Meanwhile, the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant stood on dry ground in the middle of the riverbed as the people passed by. They waited there until the whole nation of Israel had crossed the Jordan on dry ground.

For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.

“ Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them.

“ Now, my son, may the Lord be with you and give you success as you follow his directions in building the Temple of the Lord your God.And may the Lord give you wisdom and understanding, that you may obey the Law of the Lord your God as you rule over Israel.For you will be successful if you carefully obey the decrees and regulations that the Lord gave to Israel through Moses. Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or lose heart!“ I have worked hard to provide materials for building the Temple of the Lord— nearly 4,000 tons of gold, 40,000 tons of silver, and so much iron and bronze that it cannot be weighed. I have also gathered timber and stone for the walls, though you may need to add more.You have a large number of skilled stonemasons and carpenters and craftsmen of every kind.You have expert goldsmiths and silversmiths and workers of bronze and iron. Now begin the work, and may the Lord be with you!”
