我向我的百姓发怒，使我的产业受凌辱，将他们交在你手中；然而你毫不怜悯他们，连老年人你也加极重的轭。

看哪，耶和华使地空虚，变为荒芜，地面扭曲，居民四散。那时，百姓如何，祭司也如何；仆人如何，主人也如何；婢女如何，主母也如何；买主如何，卖主也如何；放债的如何，借贷的也如何；债主如何，欠债的也如何。地必全然空虚，尽都荒芜，因为这话是耶和华说的。大地悲哀凋零，世界败落衰残，地上居高位的人也没落了。地被其上的居民所污秽，因为他们犯了律法，废了律例，背了永约。所以，诅咒吞灭大地，住在其上的都有罪；地上的居民被火焚烧，剩下的人稀少。

这约不像我拉着他们祖宗的手，领他们出埃及地的时候与他们所立的约。我虽作他们的丈夫，他们却背了我的约。这是耶和华说的。

凡遇见他们的，就把他们吞灭。敌人说：“我们不算有罪；因他们得罪了那可作真正居所的耶和华，就是他们祖先所仰望的耶和华。”

不像我拉着他们祖宗的手领他们出埃及地的时候，与他们所立的约；因为他们不恒心守我的约，所以我也不理他们；这是主说的。

护卫长提耶利米来，对他说：“耶和华—你的上帝曾说要降这灾祸给此地。耶和华照他所说的做了，已使这灾祸临到；因你们得罪耶和华，不听从他的话，所以这事临到你们。

必有人回答说：‘是因他们离弃了耶和华—他们上帝的约，事奉敬拜别神。’”

他说：“我为耶和华—万军之上帝大发热心，因为以色列人背弃了你的约，毁坏了你的坛，用刀杀了你的先知，只剩下我一人，他们还要追杀我。”耶和华说：“你出来站在山上，在耶和华面前。”看哪，耶和华从那里经过。在耶和华面前有烈风大作，山崩石裂，耶和华却不在风中；风后有地震，耶和华也不在其中；地震后有火，耶和华也不在火中；火以后，有轻微细小的声音。以利亚听见，就用外衣蒙脸，出来站在洞口。听啊，有声音向他说：“以利亚，你在这里做什么？”他说：“我为耶和华—万军之上帝大发热心，因为以色列人背弃了你的约，毁坏了你的坛，用刀杀了你的先知，只剩下我一人，他们还要追杀我。”
