The Lord your God will make you his holy people. He will set you apart for himself. He promised to do this. He promised to do it if you would keep his commands and live exactly as he wants you to live.

For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.

Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the Lord will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a large nation, just as he swore to your ancestors.

In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.

They will be called“ The Holy People” and“ The People Redeemed by the Lord.” And Jerusalem will be known as“ The Desirable Place” and“ The City No Longer Forsaken.”

You are standing here today to enter into the covenant of the Lord your God. The Lord is making this covenant, including the curses.By entering into the covenant today, he will establish you as his people and confirm that he is your God, just as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.“ Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”Dear friends, I warn you as“ temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.

He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.

Regarding Jerusalem it will be said,“ Everyone enjoys the rights of citizenship there.” And the Most High will personally bless this city.

“ I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

I said this so I could keep my promise to your ancestors to give you a land flowing with milk and honey— the land you live in today.’” Then I replied,“ Amen, Lord! May it be so.”

Then I will give you good judges again and wise counselors like you used to have. Then Jerusalem will again be called the Home of Justice and the Faithful City.”

Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves you, and he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is why the Lord rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

For example, there was God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in his own name, saying:“ I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.”Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised.Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding.God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind.So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.

But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.
