therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you.

So he will send enemies against you. You will have to serve them. You will be hungry and thirsty. You will be naked and poor. The Lord will put the iron chains of slavery around your necks until he has destroyed you.

“ Say now to the rebellious house,‘ Do you not know what these things mean?’ Say,‘ Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, took its king and leaders, and brought them to him in Babylon.

Behold, I am watching over them for harm and not for good, and all the people of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will meet their end by the sword or by famine until they are completely gone.

So the Lord was no longer able to endure it, because of the evil of your deeds, because of the abominations which you have committed; so your land has become a place of ruins, an object of horror, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as it is this day.

I was angry with My people, I profaned My heritage And handed them over to you. You did not show mercy to them, On the aged you made your yoke very heavy.

But they will become his slaves, so that they may learn the difference between My service and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.”

saying,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ A great eagle with great wings, long pinions, and a full plumage of many colors came to Lebanon and took away the top of the cedar.

Moreover, He said to me,“ Son of man, behold, I am going to break the staff of bread in Jerusalem, and they will eat bread by weight and with anxiety, and drink water by measure and in horror,because bread and water will be scarce; and they will tremble with one another and waste away in their guilt.

And it shall come about when they say,‘ Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’ then you shall say to them,‘ Just as you have abandoned Me and served foreign gods in your land, so you will serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

But we will certainly carry out every word that has proceeded from our mouths, by burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, just as we ourselves, our forefathers, our kings, and our leaders did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then we had plenty of food and were well off and saw no misfortune.But since we stopped burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything, and have met our end by the sword and by famine.”

I spoke words like all these to Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,“ Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him and his people, and live!Why should you die, you and your people, by the sword, famine, and plague, as the Lord has spoken to the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon?

And you will, even of yourself, let go of your inheritance That I gave you; And I will make you serve your enemies In the land which you do not know; For you have kindled a fire in My anger Which will burn forever.

But they, in their own kingdom, With Your great goodness which You gave them, With the broad and rich land which You placed before them, Did not serve You or turn from their evil deeds.Behold, we are slaves today, And as for the land which You gave to our fathers to eat its fruit and its bounty, Behold, we are slaves on it.And its abundant produce is for the kings Whom You have set over us because of our sins; They also rule over our bodies And over our cattle as they please, So we are in great distress.

Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, Our houses to foreigners.We have become orphans, without a father; Our mothers are like widows.We have to pay for our drinking water, Our wood comes to us at a price.Our pursuers are at our necks; We are worn out, we are given no rest.We have submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.
