So he will send enemies against you. You will have to serve them. You will be hungry and thirsty. You will be naked and poor. The Lord will put the iron chains of slavery around your necks until he has destroyed you.

When people ask,‘ For what offense has the LORD our God done all these things to us?’ You will respond to them,‘ Just as you abandoned me and served foreign gods in your land, so will you serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’

Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Instead, we will do everything we promised: we will burn incense to the queen of heaven and offer drink offerings to her just as we, our ancestors, our kings, and our officials did in Judah’s cities and in Jerusalem’s streets. Then we had enough food, we were well off, and we saw no disaster,but from the time we ceased to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to offer her drink offerings, we have lacked everything, and through sword and famine we have met our end.”

I spoke to King Zedekiah of Judah in the same way:“ Put your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, serve him and his people, and live!Why should you and your people die by the sword, famine, and plague as the LORD has threatened against any nation that does not serve the king of Babylon?

You will, on your own, relinquish your inheritance that I gave you. I will make you serve your enemies in a land you do not know, for you have set my anger on fire; it will burn forever.

When they were in their kingdom, with your abundant goodness that you gave them, and in the spacious and fertile land you set before them, they would not serve you or turn from their wicked ways.Here we are today, slaves in the land you gave our ancestors so that they could enjoy its fruit and its goodness. Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners.We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are widows.We must pay for the water we drink; our wood comes at a price.We are closely pursued; we are tired, and no one offers us rest.We made a treaty with Egypt and with Assyria, to get enough food.
