The foreign resident among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink lower and lower.

The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower.

Outsiders who live among you will become your leaders. They will rise higher and higher. But you will sink lower and lower.

The sojourner who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower.

“ The foreigners living among you will become stronger and stronger, while you become weaker and weaker.

The resident alien among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink lower and lower.

The stranger who is among you will rise above you higher and higher, and you will go down lower and lower.

“ The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower.

The sojourner that is in the midst of thee shall mount up above thee higher and higher; and thou shalt come down lower and lower.

The stranger that[ is] within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low.

The foreigners who reside among you will become higher and higher over you and you will become lower and lower.

The foreigner who is among you will mount up above you higher and higher, and you will come down lower and lower.

The Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you will only move upward and never downward if you listen to the Lord your God’s commands I am giving you today and are careful to follow them.

Therefore, I now say: I will not drive out these people before you. They will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a trap for you.”

Then 3,000 men of Judah went to the cave at the rock of Etam, and they asked Samson,“ Don’t you realize that the Philistines rule over us? What have you done to us?”“ I have done to them what they did to me,” he answered.They said to him,“ We’ve come to arrest you and hand you over to the Philistines.” Then Samson told them,“ Swear to me that you yourselves won’t kill me.”

Then he deported all Jerusalem and all the commanders and all the fighting men, 10,000 captives, and all the craftsmen and metalsmiths. Except for the poorest people of the land, no one remained.Nebuchadnezzar deported Jehoiachin to Babylon. Also, he took the king’s mother, the king’s wives, his officials, and the leading men of the land into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.The king of Babylon also brought captive into Babylon all 7,000 fighting men and 1,000 craftsmen and metalsmiths— all strong and fit for war.

So Pilate told them,“ Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law.”“ It’s not legal for us to put anyone to death,” the Jews declared.

So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He sold them to the Philistines and the Ammonites.They shattered and crushed the Israelites that year, and for 18 years they did the same to all the Israelites who were on the other side of the Jordan in the land of the Amorites in Gilead.The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim. Israel was greatly oppressed,so they cried out to the Lord, saying,“ We have sinned against You. We have abandoned our God and worshiped the Baals.”

So the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel, afflicted them, and handed them over to plunderers until He had banished them from His presence.

So the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his forces was Sisera who lived in Harosheth of the Nations.Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, because Jabin had 900 iron chariots, and he harshly oppressed them 20 years.

Finally, the Lord removed Israel from His presence just as He had declared through all His servants the prophets. So Israel has been exiled to Assyria from their homeland until today.

But they shouted,“ Take Him away! Take Him away! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them,“ Should I crucify your king?”“ We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered.

The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. They worshiped the Baalsand abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods from the surrounding peoples and bowed down to them. They infuriated the Lord,for they abandoned Him and worshiped Baal and the Ashtoreths.The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He handed them over to marauders who raided them. He sold them to the enemies around them, and they could no longer resist their enemies.Whenever the Israelites went out, the Lord was against them and brought disaster on them, just as He had promised and sworn to them. So they suffered greatly.

Jonathan attacked the Philistine garrison that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. So Saul blew the ram’s horn throughout the land saying,“ Let the Hebrews hear!”And all Israel heard the news,“ Saul has attacked the Philistine garrison, and Israel is now repulsive to the Philistines.” Then the troops were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.The Philistines also gathered to fight against Israel: 3,000 chariots, 6,000 horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Michmash, east of Beth-aven.The men of Israel saw that they were in trouble because the troops were in a difficult situation. They hid in caves, thickets, among rocks, and in holes and cisterns.Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul, however, was still at Gilgal, and all his troops were gripped with fear.

Now his father and mother did not know this was from the Lord, who was seeking an occasion against the Philistines. At that time, the Philistines were ruling over Israel.

No blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, because the Philistines had said,“ Otherwise, the Hebrews will make swords or spears.”So all the Israelites went to the Philistines to sharpen their plows, mattocks, axes, and sickles.The price was two-thirds of a shekel for plows and mattocks, and one-third of a shekel for pitchforks and axes, and for putting a point on an oxgoad.So on the day of battle not a sword or spear could be found in the hand of any of the troops who were with Saul and Jonathan; only Saul and his son Jonathan had weapons.Now a Philistine garrison took control of the pass at Michmash.
