his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one of his sandals, spit in his face and say,“ This is what is done to the man who will not build up his brother’s family line.”

then his sister-in-law must approach him in view of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. She will then respond,“ Thus may it be done to any man who does not maintain his brother’s family line!”

Now this was the custom in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things: a man took off his sandal, and gave it to his neighbor; and this was the way of formalizing transactions in Israel.So the near kinsman said to Boaz,“ Buy it for yourself,” then he took off his sandal.

Yahweh said to Moses,“ If her father had but spit in her face, shouldn’t she be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut up outside of the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.”

I gave my back to those who beat me, and my cheeks to those who plucked off the hair. I didn’t hide my face from shame and spitting.
