then his sister-in-law will go up to him in the sight of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. Then she will declare,‘ This is what is done to a man who will not build up his brother’s house.’

then his sister-in-law must approach him in view of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. She will then respond,“ Thus may it be done to any man who does not maintain his brother’s family line!”

then his brother’s wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders, and loose his sandal from off his foot, and spit in his face. She shall answer and say,“ So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.”

( Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions in Israel.)So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz,“ Buy it yourself.” And he removed his sandal. (niv)
