his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one of his sandals, spit in his face and say,“ This is what is done to the man who will not build up his brother’s family line.”

the widow must walk over to him in the presence of the elders, pull his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face. Then she must declare,‘ This is what happens to a man who refuses to provide his brother with children.’

then his brother’s wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders, and loose his sandal from off his foot, and spit in his face. She shall answer and say,“ So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.”

Now this was the custom in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things: a man drew off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel.So the near kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thyself. And he drew off his shoe.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut up without the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair; I hid not my face from shame and spitting.
