If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her.

Suppose two brothers are living near each other. And one of them dies without having a son. Then his widow must not marry anyone outside the family. Her husband’s brother should marry her. That’s what a brother- in- law is supposed to do.

“ If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.

If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no son, the wife of the dead shall not be married without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her.

“夫子！摩西为我们写着说：‘人若有妻无子就死了，他兄弟当娶他的妻，为哥哥生子立后。’

犹大对俄南说：“你当与你哥哥的妻子同房，向她尽你为弟的本分，为你哥哥生子立后。”俄南知道生子不归自己，所以同房的时候便遗在地，免得给他哥哥留后。

我女儿们哪，回去吧！我年纪老迈，不能再有丈夫；即或说，我还有指望，今夜有丈夫可以生子，你们岂能等着他们长大呢？你们岂能等着他们不嫁别人呢？我女儿们哪，不要这样。我为你们的缘故甚是愁苦，因为耶和华伸手攻击我。”

他就说：“你是谁？”回答说：“我是你的婢女路得。求你用你的衣襟遮盖我，因为你是我一个至近的亲属。”

波阿斯说：“你从拿俄米手中买这地的时候，也当娶死人的妻摩押女子路得，使死人在产业上存留他的名。”
