If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her.

Suppose two brothers are living near each other. And one of them dies without having a son. Then his widow must not marry anyone outside the family. Her husband’s brother should marry her. That’s what a brother- in- law is supposed to do.

於是猶大對俄南說：“你去與你哥哥的妻子親近，向她盡你作弟弟的本分，替你的哥哥立後。”俄南知道生下來的孩子不會歸自己，所以每次與哥哥的妻子親近的時候，都遺精在地上，免得替自己的哥哥立後。

走吧，我女兒啊，你們回去吧，因為我太老，不能嫁人了，就算我說我還有希望今天晚上有個丈夫，又生兒子，你們可以等到他們長大嗎？你們可以為他們守節而不嫁人嗎？不行，我女兒啊，我為你們非常難過，因為耶和華伸手對付我。”

就說：“你是誰？”她回答：“我是你的婢女路得，請用你的衣襟遮蓋你的婢女，因為你是我一個有買贖權的近親。”

波阿斯說：“你從拿俄米手中買下那塊地的時候，你也得娶（“娶”原文作“買”）已死的人的妻子摩押女子路得，使已死的人的名字留在他的產業上。”
