I am not like those who commit adultery. I am not even like this tax collector.I fast twice a week. And I give a tenth of all I get.’

Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes. And suppose a poor man in dirty old clothes also comes in.Would you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes? Would you say,“ Here’s a good seat for you”? Would you say to the poor man,“ You stand there”? Or“ Sit on the floor by my feet”?

Five times the Jews gave me 39 strokes with a whip.Three times I was beaten with sticks. Once they tried to kill me by throwing stones at me. Three times I was shipwrecked. I spent a night and a day in the open sea.
