Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.

Do what is right and fair for outsiders and for children whose fathers have died. Suppose a widow borrows something from you. And she offers to give you her coat until she pays you back. Don’t take it.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, or take a widow’s garment in pledge,

“ True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt.

Do not deny justice to a resident alien or fatherless child, and do not take a widow’s garment as security.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due a stranger or an orphan, nor seize a widow’s garment as a pledge.

Thou shalt not wrest the justice due to the sojourner, or to the fatherless, nor take the widow’s raiment to pledge;

Do not deny justice to a foreigner or fatherless child, and do not take a widow’s garment as security.

Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger,[ nor] of the fatherless; nor take a widow’s raiment to pledge:

You must not pervert justice due a resident foreigner or an orphan, or take a widow’s garment as security for a loan.

You shall not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, nor take a widow’s clothing in pledge;

You shall not pervert justice; you shall not show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.

“ You shall neither mistreat a stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.“ You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child.

‘ Cursed is the one who perverts the justice due the stranger, the fatherless, and widow.’“ And all the people shall say,‘ Amen!’

“ You shall not pervert the judgment of your poor in his dispute.

You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid in any man’s presence, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.’

That they may successfully do evil with both hands— The prince asks for gifts, The judge seeks a bribe, And the great man utters his evil desire; So they scheme together.

“ Also you shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the heart of a stranger, because you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice.

Your princes are rebellious, And companions of thieves; Everyone loves bribes, And follows after rewards. They do not defend the fatherless, Nor does the cause of the widow come before them.

When the ear heard, then it blessed me, And when the eye saw, then it approved me;Because I delivered the poor who cried out, The fatherless and the one who had no helper.The blessing of a perishing man came upon me, And I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; My justice was like a robe and a turban.I was eyes to the blind, And I was feet to the lame.I was a father to the poor, And I searched out the case that I did not know.I broke the fangs of the wicked, And plucked the victim from his teeth.

They have grown fat, they are sleek; Yes, they surpass the deeds of the wicked; They do not plead the cause, The cause of the fatherless; Yet they prosper, And the right of the needy they do not defend.

Lord, how long will the wicked, How long will the wicked triumph?They utter speech, and speak insolent things; All the workers of iniquity boast in themselves.They break in pieces Your people, O Lord, And afflict Your heritage.They slay the widow and the stranger, And murder the fatherless.

But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them.

Do not rob the poor because he is poor, Nor oppress the afflicted at the gate;For the Lord will plead their cause, And plunder the soul of those who plunder them.

In you they have made light of father and mother; in your midst they have oppressed the stranger; in you they have mistreated the fatherless and the widow.

He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, And shuts his eyes from seeing evil:

“ No man shall take the lower or the upper millstone in pledge, for he takes one’s living in pledge.

You shall in any case return the pledge to him again when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his own garment and bless you; and it shall be righteousness to you before the Lord your God.

For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing.

What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the faces of the poor?” Says the Lord GOD of hosts.

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, The alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart Against his brother.’

The people of the land have used oppressions, committed robbery, and mistreated the poor and needy; and they wrongfully oppress the stranger.

But the mighty man possessed the land, And the honorable man dwelt in it.You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of the fatherless was crushed.

Woe to those who devise iniquity, And work out evil on their beds! At morning light they practice it, Because it is in the power of their hand.They covet fields and take them by violence, Also houses, and seize them. So they oppress a man and his house, A man and his inheritance.

Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying,“ And what shall we do?” So he said to them,“ Do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”

Here I am. Witness against me before the Lord and before His anointed: Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed, or from whose hand have I received any bribe with which to blind my eyes? I will restore it to you.”And they said,“ You have not cheated us or oppressed us, nor have you taken anything from any man’s hand.”

Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, Have fellowship with You?They gather together against the life of the righteous, And condemn innocent blood.

Lest they drink and forget the law, And pervert the justice of all the afflicted.

Thus says the Lord:“ Execute judgment and righteousness, and deliver the plundered out of the hand of the oppressor. Do no wrong and do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, or the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place.

You who turn justice to wormwood, And lay righteousness to rest in the earth!”He made the Pleiades and Orion; He turns the shadow of death into morning And makes the day dark as night; He calls for the waters of the sea And pours them out on the face of the earth; The Lord is His name.He rains ruin upon the strong, So that fury comes upon the fortress.They hate the one who rebukes in the gate, And they abhor the one who speaks uprightly.Therefore, because you tread down the poor And take grain taxes from him, Though you have built houses of hewn stone, Yet you shall not dwell in them; You have planted pleasant vineyards, But you shall not drink wine from them.For I know your manifold transgressions And your mighty sins: Afflicting the just and taking bribes; Diverting the poor from justice at the gate.

And I will come near you for judgment; I will be a swift witness Against sorcerers, Against adulterers, Against perjurers, Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans, And against those who turn away an alien— Because they do not fear Me,” Says the Lord of hosts.

God stands in the congregation of the mighty; He judges among the gods.How long will you judge unjustly, And show partiality to the wicked? SelahDefend the poor and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and needy.Deliver the poor and needy; Free them from the hand of the wicked.They do not know, nor do they understand; They walk about in darkness; All the foundations of the earth are unstable.

If you ever take your neighbor’s garment as a pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down.For that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What will he sleep in? And it will be that when he cries to Me, I will hear, for I am gracious.
