Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.

Do what is right and fair for outsiders and for children whose fathers have died. Suppose a widow borrows something from you. And she offers to give you her coat until she pays you back. Don’t take it.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, or take a widow’s garment in pledge,

“ True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt.

Do not deny justice to a resident alien or fatherless child, and do not take a widow’s garment as security.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due a stranger or an orphan, nor seize a widow’s garment as a pledge.

“ You shall not pervert justice due the stranger or the fatherless, nor take a widow’s garment as a pledge.

You must not pervert justice due a resident foreigner or an orphan, or take a widow’s garment as security for a loan.

You shall not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, nor take a widow’s clothing in pledge;

Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the innocent.

“ Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.“ Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless.

“ Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.” Then all the people shall say,“ Amen!”

“ Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits.

Do not show partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too hard for you, and I will hear it.”

Both hands are skilled in doing evil; the ruler demands gifts, the judge accepts bribes, the powerful dictate what they desire— they all conspire together.

“ Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.

“ Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd,

Your rulers are rebels, partners with thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow’s case does not come before them.

Whoever heard me spoke well of me, and those who saw me commended me,because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.The one who was dying blessed me; I made the widow’s heart sing.I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban.I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger.I broke the fangs of the wicked and snatched the victims from their teeth.

and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not seek justice. They do not promote the case of the fatherless; they do not defend the just cause of the poor.

How long, Lord, will the wicked, how long will the wicked be jubilant?They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting.They crush your people, Lord; they oppress your inheritance.They slay the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless.

But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?

If you see the poor oppressed in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still.

Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court,for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life.

In you they have treated father and mother with contempt; in you they have oppressed the foreigner and mistreated the fatherless and the widow.

Those who walk righteously and speak what is right, who reject gain from extortion and keep their hands from accepting bribes, who stop their ears against plots of murder and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—

Do not take a pair of millstones— not even the upper one— as security for a debt, because that would be taking a person’s livelihood as security.

Return their cloak by sunset so that your neighbor may sleep in it. Then they will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the Lord your God.

For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.

What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’

The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the foreigner, denying them justice.

though you were a powerful man, owning land— an honored man, living on it.And you sent widows away empty-handed and broke the strength of the fatherless.

Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they carry it out because it is in their power to do it.They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them. They defraud people of their homes, they rob them of their inheritance.

Then some soldiers asked him,“ And what should we do?” He replied,“ Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely— be content with your pay.”

Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these things, I will make it right.”“ You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied.“ You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”

Can a corrupt throne be allied with you— a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.

lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.

This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.

There are those who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground.He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns midnight into dawn and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land— the Lord is his name.With a blinding flash he destroys the stronghold and brings the fortified city to ruin.There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court and detest the one who tells the truth.You levy a straw tax on the poor and impose a tax on their grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine.For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.

“ So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,” says the Lord Almighty.

God presides in the great assembly; he renders judgment among the“ gods”:“ How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked?Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.“ The‘ gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, return it by sunset,because that cloak is the only covering your neighbor has. What else can they sleep in? When they cry out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.
