“ You shall not pervert the justice due a stranger or an orphan, nor seize a widow’s garment as a pledge.

Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.

Do what is right and fair for outsiders and for children whose fathers have died. Suppose a widow borrows something from you. And she offers to give you her coat until she pays you back. Don’t take it.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, or take a widow’s garment in pledge,

“ True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt.

Do not deny justice to a resident alien or fatherless child, and do not take a widow’s garment as security.

“ You shall not pervert justice due the stranger or the fatherless, nor take a widow’s garment as a pledge.

Thou shalt not wrest the justice due to the sojourner, or to the fatherless, nor take the widow’s raiment to pledge;

Do not deny justice to a foreigner or fatherless child, and do not take a widow’s garment as security.

Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger,[ nor] of the fatherless; nor take a widow’s raiment to pledge:

You must not pervert justice due a resident foreigner or an orphan, or take a widow’s garment as security for a loan.

You shall not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, nor take a widow’s clothing in pledge;

You shall not distort justice, you shall not show partiality; and you shall not accept a bribe, because a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and distorts the words of the righteous.

“ You shall not oppress a stranger nor torment him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.You shall not oppress any widow or orphan.

‘ Cursed is one who distorts the justice due a stranger, an orphan, or a widow.’ And all the people shall say,‘ Amen.’

“ You shall not pervert the justice due to your needy brother in his dispute.

You are not to show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You are not to be afraid of any person, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too difficult for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’

As for evil, both hands do it well. The leader asks for a bribe, also the judge, And the great one speaks the capricious desire of his soul; So they plot it together.

“ You shall not oppress a stranger, since you yourselves know the feelings of a stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt.

You shall not follow the crowd in doing evil, nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to join together with a crowd in order to pervert justice;

Your rulers are rebels And companions of thieves; Everyone loves a bribe And chases after gifts. They do not obtain justice for the orphan, Nor does the widow’s case come before them.

For when an ear heard, it called me blessed, And when an eye saw, it testified in support of me,Because I saved the poor who cried for help, And the orphan who had no helper.The blessing of the one who was about to perish came upon me, And I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; My justice was like a robe and a headband.I was eyes to those who were blind, And feet to those who could not walk.I was a father to the poor, And I investigated the case which I did not know.I broke the jaws of the wicked And rescued the prey from his teeth.

They are fat, they are sleek, They also excel in deeds of wickedness; They do not plead the cause, The cause of the orphan, so that they may be successful; And they do not defend the rights of the poor.

How long, Lord, shall the wicked— How long shall the wicked triumph?They pour out words, they speak arrogantly; All who do injustice boast.They crush Your people, Lord, And afflict Your inheritance.They kill the widow and the stranger And murder the orphans.

But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court?

If you see oppression of the poor and denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be shocked at the sight; for one official watches over another official, and there are higher officials over them.

Do not rob the poor because he is poor, Nor crush the needy at the gate;For the Lord will plead their case And take the life of those who rob them.

They have treated father and mother with contempt among you. They have oppressed the stranger in your midst; they have oppressed the orphan and the widow among you.

One who walks righteously and speaks with integrity, One who rejects unjust gain And shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe; One who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed And shuts his eyes from looking at evil;

“ No one shall seize a handmill or an upper millstone as a pledge for a loan, since he would be seizing the debtor’s means of life as a pledge.

When the sun goes down you shall certainly return the pledge to him, so that he may sleep in his cloak and bless you; and it will be righteousness for you before the Lord your God.

For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who does not show partiality, nor take a bribe.He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the stranger by giving him food and clothing.

What do you mean by crushing My people And oppressing the face of the poor?” Declares the Lord God of armies.

and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.’

The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery, and they have oppressed the poor and needy, and have oppressed the stranger without justice.

But the earth belongs to the powerful man, And the one who is honorable dwells on it.You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of orphans has been crushed.

Woe to those who devise wrongdoing, Who practice evil on their beds! When morning comes, they do it, Because it is in the power of their hands.They covet fields, so they seize them; And houses, so they take them. They exploit a man and his house, A person and his inheritance.

And soldiers also were questioning him, saying,“ What are we to do, we as well?” And he said to them,“ Do not extort money from anyone, nor harass anyone, and be content with your wages.”

Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and His anointed. Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I exploited? Whom have I oppressed, or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to close my eyes with it? I will return it to you.”And they said,“ You have not exploited us or oppressed us, or taken anything from anyone’s hand.”

Can a throne of destruction be allied with You, One which devises mischief by decree?They band themselves together against the life of the righteous And condemn the innocent to death.

Otherwise they will drink and forget what is decreed, And pervert the rights of all the needy.

This is what the Lord says:“ Do justice and righteousness, and save one who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor. And do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not shed innocent blood in this place.

For those who turn justice into wormwood, And throw righteousness to the earth.”He who made the Pleiades and Orion, And changes deep darkness into morning, Who also darkens day into night, Who calls for the waters of the sea And pours them out on the surface of the earth, The Lord is His name.It is He who makes destruction flash upon the strong, So that destruction comes upon the fortress.They hate him who rebukes in the gate, And they despise him who speaks with integrity.Therefore because you impose heavy rent on the poor And take a tribute of grain from them, Though you have built houses of cut stone, Yet you will not live in them; You have planted beautiful vineyards, yet you will not drink their wine.For I know your offenses are many and your sins are great, You who are hostile to the righteous and accept bribes, And turn away the poor from justice at the gate.

“ Then I will come near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, those who oppress the wage earner in his wages or the widow or the orphan, and those who turn away the stranger from justice and do not fear Me,” says the Lord of armies.

God takes His position in His assembly; He judges in the midst of the gods.How long will you judge unjustly And show partiality to the wicked? SelahVindicate the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.Rescue the weak and needy; Save them from the hand of the wicked.They do not know nor do they understand; They walk around in darkness; All the foundations of the earth are shaken.

If you ever seize your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, you are to return it to him before the sun sets,for that is his only covering; it is his cloak for his body. What else is he to sleep in? And it will come about that when he cries out to Me, I will listen to him, for I am gracious.
