Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.

Do what is right and fair for outsiders and for children whose fathers have died. Suppose a widow borrows something from you. And she offers to give you her coat until she pays you back. Don’t take it.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, or take a widow’s garment in pledge,

“ True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due a stranger or an orphan, nor seize a widow’s garment as a pledge.

“ You shall not pervert justice due the stranger or the fatherless, nor take a widow’s garment as a pledge.

Thou shalt not wrest the justice due to the sojourner, or to the fatherless, nor take the widow’s raiment to pledge;

Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger,[ nor] of the fatherless; nor take a widow’s raiment to pledge:

You must not pervert justice due a resident foreigner or an orphan, or take a widow’s garment as security for a loan.

You shall not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, nor take a widow’s clothing in pledge;

Do not deny justice or show partiality to anyone. Do not accept a bribe, for it blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.

“ You must not exploit a resident alien or oppress him, since you were resident aliens in the land of Egypt.“ You must not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.

‘ The one who denies justice to a resident alien, a fatherless child, or a widow is cursed.’ And all the people will say,‘ Amen!’

“ You must not deny justice to a poor person among you in his lawsuit.

Do not show partiality when deciding a case; listen to small and great alike. Do not be intimidated by anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.

Both hands are good at accomplishing evil: the official and the judge demand a bribe; when the powerful man communicates his evil desire, they plot it together.

You must not oppress a resident alien; you yourselves know how it feels to be a resident alien because you were resident aliens in the land of Egypt.

“ You must not follow a crowd in wrongdoing. Do not testify in a lawsuit and go along with a crowd to pervert justice.

Your rulers are rebels, friends of thieves. They all love graft and chase after bribes. They do not defend the rights of the fatherless, and the widow’s case never comes before them.

When they heard me, they blessed me, and when they saw me, they spoke well of me.For I rescued the poor who cried out for help, and the fatherless child who had no one to support him.The dying blessed me, and I made the widow’s heart rejoice.I clothed myself in righteousness, and it enveloped me; my just decisions were like a robe and a turban.I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.I was a father to the needy, and I examined the case of the stranger.I shattered the fangs of the unjust and snatched the prey from his teeth.

They have become fat and sleek. They have also excelled in evil matters. They have not taken up cases, such as the case of the fatherless, so they might prosper, and they have not defended the rights of the needy.

LORD, how long will the wicked— how long will the wicked celebrate?They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers boast.LORD, they crush your people; they oppress your heritage.They kill the widow and the resident alien and murder the fatherless.

Yet you have dishonored the poor. Don’t the rich oppress you and drag you into court?

If you see oppression of the poor and perversion of justice and righteousness in the province, don’t be astonished at the situation, because one official protects another official, and higher officials protect them.

Don’t rob a poor person because he is poor, and don’t crush the oppressed at the city gate,for the LORD will champion their cause and will plunder those who plunder them.

Father and mother are treated with contempt, and the resident alien is exploited within you. The fatherless and widow are oppressed in you.

The one who lives righteously and speaks rightly, who refuses profit from extortion, whose hand never takes a bribe, who stops his ears from listening to murderous plots and shuts his eyes against evil schemes—

“ Do not take a pair of grindstones or even the upper millstone as security for a debt, because that is like taking a life as security.

Be sure to return it to him at sunset. Then he will sleep in it and bless you, and this will be counted as righteousness to you before the LORD your God.

For the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awe-inspiring God, showing no partiality and taking no bribe.He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the resident alien, giving him food and clothing.

Why do you crush my people and grind the faces of the poor?” This is the declaration of the Lord GOD of Armies.

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the resident alien or the poor, and do not plot evil in your hearts against one another.’

The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy and unlawfully exploited the resident alien.

while the land belonged to a powerful man and an influential man lived on it.You sent widows away empty-handed, and the strength of the fatherless was crushed.

Woe to those who dream up wickedness and prepare evil plans on their beds! At morning light they accomplish it because the power is in their hands.They covet fields and seize them; they also take houses. They deprive a man of his home, a person of his inheritance.

Some soldiers also questioned him,“ What should we do?” He said to them,“ Don’t take money from anyone by force or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”

Here I am. Bring charges against me before the LORD and his anointed: Whose ox or donkey have I taken? Who have I wronged or mistreated? Who gave me a bribe to overlook something? I will return it to you.”“ You haven’t wronged us, you haven’t mistreated us, and you haven’t taken anything from anyone,” they responded.

Can a corrupt throne be your ally, a throne that makes evil laws?They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.

Otherwise, he will drink, forget what is decreed, and pervert justice for all the oppressed.

This is what the LORD says: Administer justice and righteousness. Rescue the victim of robbery from his oppressor. Don’t exploit or brutalize the resident alien, the fatherless, or the widow. Don’t shed innocent blood in this place.

Those who turn justice into wormwood also throw righteousness to the ground.The one who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns darkness into dawn and darkens day into night, who summons the water of the sea and pours it out over the surface of the earth— the LORD is his name.He brings destruction on the strong, and it falls on the fortress.They hate the one who convicts the guilty at the city gate, and they despise the one who speaks with integrity.Therefore, because you trample on the poor and exact a grain tax from him, you will never live in the houses of cut stone you have built; you will never drink the wine from the lush vineyards you have planted.For I know your crimes are many and your sins innumerable. They oppress the righteous, take a bribe, and deprive the poor of justice at the city gates.

“ I will come to you in judgment, and I will be ready to witness against sorcerers and adulterers; against those who swear falsely; against those who oppress the hired worker, the widow, and the fatherless; and against those who deny justice to the resident alien. They do not fear me,” says the LORD of Armies.

God stands in the divine assembly; he pronounces judgment among the gods:“ How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? SelahProvide justice for the needy and the fatherless; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.Rescue the poor and needy; save them from the power of the wicked.”They do not know or understand; they wander in darkness. All the foundations of the earth are shaken.

“ If you ever take your neighbor’s cloak as collateral, return it to him before sunset.For it is his only covering; it is the clothing for his body. What will he sleep in? And if he cries out to me, I will listen because I am gracious.
