Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns.

Don’t take advantage of any hired worker who is poor and needy. That applies to your own people. It also applies to outsiders living in one of your towns.

“ You shall not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the sojourners who are in your land within your towns.

“ Never take advantage of poor and destitute laborers, whether they are fellow Israelites or foreigners living in your towns.

“ You shall not exploit a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your countrymen or one of your strangers who are in your land in your towns.

“ You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether one of your brethren or one of the aliens who is in your land within your gates.

Thou shalt not oppress a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy sojourners that are in thy land within thy gates:

“ Do not oppress a hired hand who is poor and needy, whether one of your brothers or one of the foreigners residing within a town in your land.

You must not oppress a lowly and poor servant, whether one from among your fellow Israelites or from the resident foreigners who are living in your land and villages.

You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the foreigners who are in your land within your gates.

“ I will come to you in judgment, and I will be ready to witness against sorcerers and adulterers; against those who swear falsely; against those who oppress the hired worker, the widow, and the fatherless; and against those who deny justice to the resident alien. They do not fear me,” says the LORD of Armies.

The one who oppresses the poor person insults his Maker, but one who is kind to the needy honors him.

Oppressing the poor to enrich oneself, and giving to the rich— both lead only to poverty.

Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan who are on the hill of Samaria, women who oppress the poor and crush the needy, who say to their husbands,“ Bring us something to drink.”

They trample the heads of the poor on the dust of the ground and obstruct the path of the needy. A man and his father have sexual relations with the same girl, profaning my holy name.

If I have dismissed the case of my male or female servants when they made a complaint against me,what could I do when God stands up to judge? How should I answer him when he calls me to account?Did not the one who made me in the womb also make them? Did not the same God form us both in the womb?

Without clothing, they wander about naked. They carry sheaves but go hungry.They crush olives in their presses; they tread the winepresses, but go thirsty.

“ If your brother becomes destitute and cannot sustain himself among you, you are to support him as an alien or temporary resident, so that he can continue to live among you.Do not profit or take interest from him, but fear your God and let your brother live among you.You are not to lend him your silver with interest or sell him your food for profit.I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.“ If your brother among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, you must not force him to do slave labor.Let him stay with you as a hired worker or temporary resident; he may work for you until the Year of Jubilee.Then he and his children are to be released from you, and he may return to his clan and his ancestral property.They are not to be sold as slaves, because they are my servants that I brought out of the land of Egypt.You are not to rule over them harshly but fear your God.

“ If your fellow Hebrew, a man or woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, you must set him free in the seventh year.When you set him free, do not send him away empty-handed.Give generously to him from your flock, your threshing floor, and your winepress. You are to give him whatever the LORD your God has blessed you with.Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you; that is why I am giving you this command today.But if your slave says to you,‘ I don’t want to leave you,’ because he loves you and your family, and is well off with you,take an awl and pierce through his ear into the door, and he will become your slave for life. Also treat your female slave the same way.Do not regard it as a hardship when you set him free, because he worked for you six years— worth twice the wages of a hired worker. Then the LORD your God will bless you in everything you do.

Father and mother are treated with contempt, and the resident alien is exploited within you. The fatherless and widow are oppressed in you.

Hear this, you who trample on the needy and do away with the poor of the land,

Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Don’t move from house to house.
