If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you.

But the Canaanites were forced to work as slaves for the people of Zebulun.The tribe of Asher failed to drive out the residents of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphik, and Rehob.Instead, the people of Asher moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land, for they failed to drive them out.Likewise, the tribe of Naphtali failed to drive out the residents of Beth shemesh and Beth anath. Instead, they moved in among the Canaanites, who controlled the land. Nevertheless, the people of Beth shemesh and Beth anath were forced to work as slaves for the people of Naphtali.As for the tribe of Dan, the Amorites forced them back into the hill country and would not let them come down into the plains.The Amorites were determined to stay in Mount Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim, but when the descendants of Joseph became stronger, they forced the Amorites to work as slaves.

When the Israelites grew stronger, they forced the Canaanites to work as slaves, but they never did drive them completely out of the land.

These were descendants of the nations whom the people of Israel had not completely destroyed. So Solomon conscripted them as slaves, and they serve as forced laborers to this day.But Solomon did not conscript any of the Israelites for forced labor. Instead, he assigned them to serve as fighting men, government officials, officers and captains in his army, commanders of his chariots, and charioteers.

The people of Israel are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt, so they must never be sold as slaves.Show your fear of God by not treating them harshly.“ However, you may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you.You may also purchase the children of temporary residents who live among you, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property,passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat them as slaves, but you must never treat your fellow Israelites this way.

I search for peace; but when I speak of peace, they want war!

No one in this region made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites of Gibeon. All the others were defeated.For the Lord hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites. So they were completely destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say,‘ We do not want him to be our king.’

But that day he made the Gibeonites the woodcutters and water carriers for the community of Israel and for the altar of the Lord— wherever the Lord would choose to build it. And that is what they do to this day.

They did not drive the Canaanites out of Gezer, however, so the people of Gezer live as slaves among the people of Ephraim to this day.
