And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be,[ that] all the people[ that is] found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.

If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you.

Suppose they accept your offer and open their gates. Then force all the people in the city to be your slaves. They will have to work for you.

And if it responds to you peaceably and it opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall do forced labor for you and shall serve you.

If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor.

If it accepts your offer of peace and opens its gates to you, all the people found in it will become forced laborers for you and serve you.

And if it agrees to make peace with you and opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall become your forced labor and serve you.

And it shall be that if they accept your offer of peace, and open to you, then all the people who are found in it shall be placed under tribute to you, and serve you.

Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to destroy, upon those did Solomon levy a tribute of bondservice unto this day.But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no bondmen: but they[ were] men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his chariots, and his horsemen.

For they[ are] my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have,[ shall be] of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that[ are] with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit[ them for] a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.

I[ am for] peace: but when I speak, they[ are] for war.

There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all[ other] they took in battle.For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly,[ and] that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.

But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this[ man] to reign over us.

And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

And they drave not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites unto this day, and serve under tribute.
