Give the people these orders:‘ You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful.

Here are the orders I want you to give the people. Tell them,‘ You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives. They are from the family line of Esau. They live in Seir. They will be afraid of you. But be very careful.

And command thou the people, saying, Ye[ are] to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:

Instruct these people as follows:‘ You are about to cross the border of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who inhabit Seir. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves carefully.

Command the people, saying,‘ You are to pass through the border of your brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore be careful.

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying:“ This is what your brother Israel says: You know about all the hardships that have come on us.Our ancestors went down into Egypt, and we lived there many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors,but when we cried out to the Lord, he heard our cry and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt.“ Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”But Edom answered:“ You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword.”The Israelites replied:“ We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot— nothing else.”Again they answered:“ You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory, Israel turned away from them.

The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, the people of Canaan will melt away;

Do not despise an Edomite, for the Edomites are related to you. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you resided as foreigners in their country.

so that you may become blameless and pure,“ children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky

and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread because of the Israelites.The Moabites said to the elders of Midian,“ This horde is going to lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time,

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Then he said to them,“ Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor gloat over them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster.

Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”Then he spoke his message:“ The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:“ I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the people of Sheth.Edom will be conquered; Seir, his enemy, will be conquered, but Israel will grow strong.

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.

Be very careful, then, how you live— not as unwise but as wise,
