Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.

Between the time we left Kadesh Barnea and the time we went across the Zered Valley, 38 years had passed. By then, all the fighting men who had been in our camp from the beginning had died. The Lord had warned them that it would happen.

And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.

“ Thirty eight years passed from the time we first left Kadesh barnea until we finally crossed the Zered Brook! By then, all the men old enough to fight in battle had died in the wilderness, as the Lord had vowed would happen.

The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley was thirty-eight years until the entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.

Now the time that it took for us to come from Kadesh barnea until we crossed over the Wadi Zered was thirty eight years, until all the generation of the men of war perished from within the camp, just as the Lord had sworn to them.

And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered,[ was] thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.

Now the length of time it took for us to go from Kadesh Barnea to the crossing of Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, time for all the military men of that generation to die, just as the LORD had vowed to them.

The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea until we had come over the brook Zered were thirty- eight years: until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as Yahweh swore to them.

“ And the Lord heard the sound of your words, and was angry, and took an oath, saying,‘ surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see that good land of which I swore to give to your fathers,

So I also raised My hand in an oath to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them,‘ flowing with milk and honey,’ the glory of all lands,

So I swore in My wrath,‘ They shall not enter My rest.’”

But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they numbered the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Sinai.For the Lord had said of them,“ They shall surely die in the wilderness.” So there was not left a man of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.

“ So we departed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the mountains of the Amorites, as the Lord our God had commanded us. Then we came to Kadesh Barnea.

Say to them,‘ As I live,’ says the Lord,‘ just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you:The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above.Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness.According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years, and you shall know My rejection.I the Lord have spoken this. I will surely do so to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.’”

But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; We finish our years like a sigh.

“ So you remained in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you spent there.

You turn man to destruction, And say,“ Return, O children of men.”

Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness,Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years.Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said,‘ They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’So I swore in My wrath,‘ They shall not enter My rest.’”Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;but exhort one another daily, while it is called“ Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,while it is said:“ Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses?Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

Therefore He raised His hand in an oath against them, To overthrow them in the wilderness,

‘ surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and above, shall see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because they have not wholly followed Me,
