Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.

Between the time we left Kadesh Barnea and the time we went across the Zered Valley, 38 years had passed. By then, all the fighting men who had been in our camp from the beginning had died. The Lord had warned them that it would happen.

And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.

“ Thirty eight years passed from the time we first left Kadesh barnea until we finally crossed the Zered Brook! By then, all the men old enough to fight in battle had died in the wilderness, as the Lord had vowed would happen.

Now the time that it took for us to come from Kadesh barnea until we crossed over the Wadi Zered was thirty eight years, until all the generation of the men of war perished from within the camp, just as the Lord had sworn to them.

And the time we took to come from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the Valley of the Zered was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war was consumed from the midst of the camp, just as the Lord had sworn to them.

And the days in which we came from Kadesh- barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, were thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the midst of the camp, as Jehovah sware unto them.

And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered,[ was] thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.

Now the length of time it took for us to go from Kadesh Barnea to the crossing of Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, time for all the military men of that generation to die, just as the LORD had vowed to them.

The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea until we had come over the brook Zered were thirty- eight years: until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as Yahweh swore to them.

“ When the LORD heard your words, he grew angry and swore an oath:‘ None of these men in this evil generation will see the good land I swore to give your ancestors,

However, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them— the most beautiful of all lands, flowing with milk and honey—

So I swore in my anger,“ They will not enter my rest.”

But among them there was not one of those who had been registered by Moses and the priest Aaron when they registered the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.For the LORD had said to them that they would all die in the wilderness. None of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

The men went back to Moses, Aaron, and the entire Israelite community in the Wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. They brought back a report for them and the whole community, and they showed them the fruit of the land.

It is an eleven-day journey from Horeb to Kadesh-barnea by way of Mount Seir.

“ We then set out from Horeb and went across all the great and terrible wilderness you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, just as the LORD our God had commanded us. When we reached Kadesh-barnea,

Tell them: As I live— this is the LORD’s declaration— I will do to you exactly as I heard you say.Your corpses will fall in this wilderness— all of you who were registered in the census, the entire number of you twenty years old or more— because you have complained about me.I swear that none of you will enter the land I promised to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.I will bring your children whom you said would become plunder into the land you rejected, and they will enjoy it.But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness.Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years and bear the penalty for your acts of unfaithfulness until all your corpses lie scattered in the wilderness.You will bear the consequences of your iniquities forty years based on the number of the forty days that you scouted the land, a year for each day. You will know my displeasure.I, the LORD, have spoken. I swear that I will do this to the entire evil community that has conspired against me. They will come to an end in the wilderness, and there they will die.”

Nevertheless God was not pleased with most of them, since they were struck down in the wilderness.

For all our days ebb away under your wrath; we end our years like a sigh.

For this reason you stayed in Kadesh as long as you did.

You return mankind to the dust, saying,“ Return, descendants of Adam.”

do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,where your ancestors tested me, tried me, and saw my worksfor forty years. Therefore I was provoked to anger with that generation and said,“ They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known my ways.”So I swore in my anger,“ They will not enter my rest.”Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception.For we have become participants in Christ if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start.As it is said: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.For who heard and rebelled? Wasn’t it all who came out of Egypt under Moses?With whom was God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, if not to those who disobeyed?So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

Now I want to remind you, although you came to know all these things once and for all, that Jesus saved a people out of Egypt and later destroyed those who did not believe;

So he raised his hand against them with an oath that he would make them fall in the desert

‘ Because they did not remain loyal to me, none of the men twenty years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—
