If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.

Sometimes a prophet will announce something in the name of the Lord. And it won’t take place or come true. Then that’s a message the Lord hasn’t told him to speak. That prophet has dared to speak on his own authority. So don’t be afraid of what he says.

If the prophet speaks in the Lord’s name but his prediction does not happen or come true, you will know that the Lord did not give that message. That prophet has spoken without my authority and need not be feared.

This year you shall die, because you have uttered rebellion against the Lord.’”In that same year, in the seventh month, the prophet Hananiah died.

Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever?But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? So they repented and said,‘ As the Lord of hosts purposed to deal with us for our ways and deeds, so has he dealt with us.’”

Let them bring them, and tell us what is to happen. Tell us the former things, what they are, that we may consider them, that we may know their outcome; or declare to us the things to come.
