Here are things you must not do. Don’t sacrifice your children in the fire to other gods. Don’t practice any kind of evil magic at all. Don’t use magic to try to explain the meaning of warnings in the sky or of any other signs. Don’t take part in worshiping evil powers.

“‘ Do not look for advice from people who get messages from those who have died. Do not go to people who talk to the spirits of the dead. If you do, they will make you“ unclean.” I am the Lord your God.

“‘ Do not eat any meat that still has blood in it.“‘ Do not practice any kind of evil magic.

“ Do not let a woman who does evil magic stay alive. Put her to death.

All the advice you have received has only worn you out! Let those who study the heavens come forward. They claim to know what is going to happen by watching the stars every month. So let them save you from the trouble that is coming on you.

You must not worship the Lord your God the way they worship their gods. When they worship, they do all kinds of evil things the Lord hates. They even burn up their children in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.

Saul died because he wasn’t faithful to the Lord. He didn’t obey the word of the Lord. He even asked for advice from a person who gets messages from people who have died.

He got messages from people who had died. He talked to the spirits of people who have died. He did many things that were evil in the eyes of the Lord. Manasseh made the Lord very angry.

Saul spoke to his attendants. He said,“ Find me a woman who gets messages from those who have died. Then I can go and ask her some questions.”“ There’s a woman like that in Endor,” they said.

“ Say to the Israelites,‘ Suppose a person sacrifices one of his children to the god Molek. It does not matter whether that person is an Israelite or an outsider who lives in Israel. He must be put to death. The members of the community must kill him by throwing stones at him.I will turn against that man. I will separate him from his people. That’s because he has sacrificed his child to Molek. He has made my sacred tent“ unclean.” He has treated my name as if it were not holy.Suppose the members of the community act like they don’t know that the man has sacrificed his child to Molek. And suppose they don’t put him to death.Then I will turn against that man and his family. I will separate them from their people. I will also separate all those who follow him by joining themselves to Molek. They are not faithful to me.

He burned sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom. He sacrificed his children in the fire to other gods. He followed the practices of the nations. The Lord hates these practices. The Lord had driven out those nations to make room for the people of Israel.

A number of those who had practiced evil magic brought their scrolls together. They set them on fire out in the open. They added up the value of the scrolls. The scrolls were worth more than someone could earn in two lifetimes.

But the woman said to him,“ By now you must know what Saul has done. He has removed everyone who gets messages from those who have died. He has also removed everyone who talks to the spirits of the dead. He has thrown all of them out of the land. Why are you trying to trap me? Why do you want to have me put to death?”

Then you must put that man or woman to death. You must kill them by throwing stones at them. Anything that happens to them will be their own fault.’ ”

Samuel had died. The whole nation of Israel was filled with sorrow because he was dead. They had buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had thrown out of the land people who get messages from those who have died. He had also thrown out people who talk to the spirits of the dead.

They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced all kinds of evil magic. They gave up following God’s rules. They did only what was evil in the eyes of the Lord. All these things made him very angry.

He followed the ways of the kings of Israel. He even sacrificed his son in the fire to another god. He followed the practices of the nations. The Lord hated those practices. He had driven out those nations to make room for the Israelites.

It includes worshiping statues of gods and worshiping evil powers. It also includes hatred and fighting, jealousy and fits of anger. Sinful desire is interested only in getting ahead. It stirs up trouble. It separates people into their own little groups.

There are people who get messages from those who have died. But these people only whisper words that are barely heard. Suppose someone tells you to ask for advice from these people. Shouldn’t you ask for advice from your God instead? Why should you get advice from dead people to help those who are alive?Follow what the Lord taught you and said to you through me. People who don’t speak in keeping with these words will have no hope in the morning.

“‘ Do not hand over any of your children to be sacrificed to the god Molek. That would be treating my name as if it were not holy. I am the Lord your God.“‘ Do not have sex with a man as you would have sex with a woman. I hate that.“‘ Do not have sex with an animal. Do not make yourself“ unclean” by doing that. A woman must not offer herself to an animal to have sex with it. That is a wrong use of sex.“‘ Do not make yourselves“ unclean” in any of these ways. That is how other nations became“ unclean.” So I am going to drive those nations out of the land to make room for you.Even their land was not“ clean.” So I punished it because of its sin. The land itself threw out the people who lived there.But you must keep my rules and my laws. You must not do any of the things I hate. It does not matter whether you are Israelites or outsiders.All these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you. That is how the land became“ unclean.”If you make the land“ unclean,” it will throw you out. It will get rid of you just as it got rid of the nations there before you.“‘ Suppose you do any of the things I hate. Then you must be separated from your people.Do exactly what I require. When you arrive in Canaan, do not follow any of the practices of its people. I hate the things they do. Do not make yourselves“ unclean” by doing them. I am the Lord your God.’ ”

My people have deserted me. They have made this city a place where other gods are worshiped. They have burned incense to them here. They, their people of long ago and the kings of Judah had never known these gods. My people have also filled this place with the blood of those who aren’t guilty.They have built the high places where they worship Baal. There they sacrifice their children in the fire as offerings to Baal. That is something I did not command or talk about. It did not even enter my mind.So watch out!” announces the Lord.“ The days are coming when people will not call this place Topheth anymore. And they will not call it the Valley of Ben Hinnom either. Instead, they will call it the Valley of Death.

The people built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom. That is where they sacrifice their children to Molek in the fire. That is something I did not command. It did not even enter my mind. They did something I hate. They made Judah sin.”
