“ When you drive out the nations that live there, you must destroy all the places where they worship their gods— high on the mountains, up on the hills, and under every green tree.

爾所驅之民、服事其上帝、無論高山之巔、茂林之下、爾必廢其處、

爾將驅逐列國之人、凡彼等事其神之處、無論高山上、崗上、諸茂樹下、俱當毀壞、

Destroy completely all the places on the high mountains, on the hills and under every spreading tree, where the nations you are dispossessing worship their gods.

You will soon drive the nations out of it. Completely destroy all the places where they worship their gods. Destroy them on the high mountains, on the hills and under every green tree.

He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the pagan shrines and on the hills and under every green tree.

This is what you must do. You must break down their pagan altars and shatter their sacred pillars. Cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols.

“ You must burn their idols in fire, and you must not covet the silver or gold that covers them. You must not take it or it will become a trap to you, for it is detestable to the Lord your God.Do not bring any detestable objects into your home, for then you will be destroyed, just like them. You must utterly detest such things, for they are set apart for destruction.

During the reign of King Josiah, the Lord said to me,“ Have you seen what fickle Israel has done? Like a wife who commits adultery, Israel has worshiped other gods on every hill and under every green tree.

They set up sacred pillars and Asherah poles at the top of every hill and under every green tree.They offered sacrifices on all the hilltops, just like the nations the Lord had driven from the land ahead of them. So the people of Israel had done many evil things, arousing the Lord’s anger.

“ Be very careful never to make a treaty with the people who live in the land where you are going. If you do, you will follow their evil ways and be trapped.Instead, you must break down their pagan altars, smash their sacred pillars, and cut down their Asherah poles.You must worship no other gods, for the Lord, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.“ You must not make a treaty of any kind with the people living in the land. They lust after their gods, offering sacrifices to them. They will invite you to join them in their sacrificial meals, and you will go with them.Then you will accept their daughters, who sacrifice to other gods, as wives for your sons. And they will seduce your sons to commit adultery against me by worshiping other gods.You must not make any gods of molten metal for yourselves.

“ Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: When you cross the Jordan River into the land of Canaan,you must drive out all the people living there. You must destroy all their carved and molten images and demolish all their pagan shrines.

for when I brought them into the land I had promised them, they offered sacrifices on every high hill and under every green tree they saw! They roused my fury as they offered up sacrifices to their gods. They brought their perfumes and incense and poured out their liquid offerings to them.I said to them,‘ What is this high place where you are going?’( This kind of pagan shrine has been called Bamah—‘ high place’— ever since.)

The king also desecrated the pagan shrines east of Jerusalem, to the south of the Mount of Corruption, where King Solomon of Israel had built shrines for Ashtoreth, the detestable goddess of the Sidonians; and for Chemosh, the detestable god of the Moabites; and for Molech, the vile god of the Ammonites.

They offer sacrifices to idols on the mountaintops. They go up into the hills to burn incense in the pleasant shade of oaks, poplars, and terebinth trees.“ That is why your daughters turn to prostitution, and your daughters in law commit adultery.

You must not worship the gods of these nations or serve them in any way or imitate their evil practices. Instead, you must utterly destroy them and smash their sacred pillars.

The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth baal. From there he could see some of the people of Israel spread out below him.

For your part, you were not to make any covenants with the people living in this land; instead, you were to destroy their altars. But you disobeyed my command. Why did you do this?
