那時猶大人挨近前來、在吉甲見約書亞，有基尼洗人耶孚尼的兒子迦勒對約書亞說：『永恆主在加低斯巴尼亞對神人摩西所說關於我和你的話、你是知道的。永恆主的僕人摩西從加低斯巴尼亞打發我來偵探這地，那時我四十歲；我盡心裏所有的向他報告。然而同我上去的那些族弟兄卻使人民膽戰心驚；而我則滿心滿懷跟從永恆主我的上帝。當日摩西起誓說：「你腳所踏的地一定要歸你和你子孫為產業到永遠，因為你滿心滿懷跟從永恆主我的上帝。」現在你看，自從永恆主對摩西說了這句話以後、永恆主便照他所應許的使我活了這四十五年，就是以色列人在曠野漂流的時間；現在你看我，我今日已是個八十五歲人了。我今日還很強壯，像摩西打發我去那天一樣；無論是爭戰，是出入，那時我力氣怎樣，現在我力氣還是怎樣。現在求你將永恆主當日說過的這山地給我；因為你當日也聽說那裏有亞衲人、和闊大堅固的城；或者永恆主和我同在，我就把他們趕出。』於是約書亞給迦勒祝福，將希伯崙給耶孚尼的兒子迦勒為產業。因此希伯崙給基尼洗人耶孚尼的兒子迦勒為產業、直到今日；因為他滿心滿懷跟從永恆主以色列的上帝。

惟獨基尼洗人耶孚尼的兒子迦勒、和嫩的兒子約書亞可以看見，因為他們滿心滿懷地跟從永恆主。」

因為永恆主曾經說到他們、說：『他們一定必死在曠野。』所以除了耶孚尼的兒子迦勒、和嫩的兒子約書亞以外、他們中間連一個人也沒有留下來。

屬猶大支派的是耶孚尼的兒子迦勒；

迦勒在摩西面前叫人民安靜下來、說：『我們立刻上去、取得那地吧！我們足能勝過它。』

迦勒說：『誰能攻擊基列西弗，將城攻取，我就把我女兒押撒給他為妻。』迦勒的兄弟、那比他小的、基納斯的兒子俄陀聶攻取了那城，迦勒就把女兒押撒給他為妻。押撒過門的時候，慫恿丈夫向她父親求塊田地；押撒一下驢，迦勒就問她說：『你要甚麼？』她說：『請將一件祝福禮給我；你既給我住南地，求你也給我一塊有水的盆地。』迦勒就把上盆地和下盆地都給了她。
