那时，犹大支派的人来到吉甲见约书亚，其中有基尼洗族耶孚尼的儿子迦勒。他对约书亚说：“你知道耶和华在加低斯·巴尼亚跟上帝的仆人摩西提到关于你和我的事。我四十岁那年，耶和华的仆人摩西从加低斯·巴尼亚派我来侦察这地方，我如实禀告他。与我同去的弟兄的禀告令以色列人胆战心惊，但我忠心地追随我的上帝耶和华。所以，当日摩西就向我起誓，‘你脚踏过的地方必永远归你和你的子孙作产业，因为你忠心地追随我的上帝耶和华。’耶和华照祂的应许，让我又活了四十五年，这些日子都是跟以色列人在旷野一起度过的。看！我现在已经八十五岁了，仍像当年摩西派我出去时那样身强力壮，跟当年一样能征善战。现在，求你照耶和华当日向我应许的，把这山区赐给我。你亲耳听到那里有亚衲人，他们的城池高大坚固。但如果耶和华与我同在，我必照着祂的应许把这些人赶走。”于是，约书亚便祝福耶孚尼的儿子迦勒，把希伯仑给他，作为他的产业。所以，希伯仑至今仍是基尼洗族耶孚尼的儿子迦勒的产业，因为他忠心地追随以色列的上帝耶和华。

只有基尼洗族耶孚尼的儿子迦勒和嫩的儿子约书亚可以看到，因为他们全心全意地跟从我。’

因为耶和华说过，那批人都要死在旷野。果然，除了耶孚尼的儿子迦勒和嫩的儿子约书亚以外，上次登记的人无一存活。

犹大支派耶孚尼的儿子迦勒，

迦勒让站在摩西面前的民众安静，然后说：“我们立刻去占领那地方吧！我们必能取胜。”

迦勒说：“谁攻取基列·西弗，我就把女儿押撒嫁给他。”迦勒的兄弟基纳斯的儿子俄陀聂攻取了那城，迦勒便把女儿押撒嫁给他。押撒出嫁的时候，劝丈夫向她父亲要一块田。她刚下驴，迦勒便问她：“你想要什么？”她回答说：“求你恩待我，你既然把南部的干地赐给我，求你也把水泉给我吧。”于是，迦勒把上泉和下泉都给了她。
