“ Then the Lord heard the sound of your words, and He was angry and swore an oath, saying,

When the Lord heard what you said, he was angry and solemnly swore:

Certainly all the people who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice,shall by no means see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who were disrespectful to Me see it.But as for My servant Caleb, because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring him into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it.Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron again, saying,“ How long shall I put up with this evil congregation who are grumbling against Me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel which they are voicing against Me.Say to them,‘ As I live,’ declares the Lord,‘ just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you;your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness, all your numbered men according to your complete number from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me.By no means will you come into the land where I swore to settle you, except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, As on the day of trial in the wilderness,Where your fathers put Me to the test, And saw My works for forty years.Therefore I was angry with this generation, And said,‘ They always go astray in their heart, And they did not know My ways’;As I swore in My anger,‘ They certainly shall not enter My rest.’ ”

Therefore I swore in My anger, They certainly shall not enter My rest.”

This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh barnea to see the land.For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the sons of Israel so that they did not go into the land which the Lord had given them.So the Lord’s anger burned on that day, and He swore, saying,‘ None of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; for they did not follow Me fully,except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun; for they have followed the Lord fully.’So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until the entire generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the Lord came to an end.

Also I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all the lands,

Now the time that it took for us to come from Kadesh barnea until we crossed over the Wadi Zered was thirty eight years, until all the generation of the men of war perished from within the camp, just as the Lord had sworn to them.Indeed, the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from within the camp until they all perished.
