“ Listen to me, descendants of Jacob, all you who remain in Israel. I have cared for you since you were born. Yes, I carried you before you were born.I will be your God throughout your lifetime— until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.

In all their suffering he also suffered, and he personally rescued them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the years.

He put up with them through forty years of wandering in the wilderness.

And Moses said to the Lord,“ Why are you treating me, your servant, so harshly? Have mercy on me! What did I do to deserve the burden of all these people?Did I give birth to them? Did I bring them into the world? Why did you tell me to carry them in my arms like a mother carries a nursing baby? How can I carry them to the land you swore to give their ancestors?

‘ You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.

I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him.I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him.

He found them in a desert land, in an empty, howling wasteland. He surrounded them and watched over them; he guarded them as he would guard his own eyes.Like an eagle that rouses her chicks and hovers over her young, so he spread his wings to take them up and carried them safely on his pinions.The Lord alone guided them; they followed no foreign gods.

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.

You led our ancestors by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night so that they could find their way.“ You came down at Mount Sinai and spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and instructions that were just, and decrees and commands that were good.You instructed them concerning your holy Sabbath. And you commanded them, through Moses your servant, to obey all your commands, decrees, and instructions.“ You gave them bread from heaven when they were hungry and water from the rock when they were thirsty. You commanded them to go and take possession of the land you had sworn to give them.“ But our ancestors were proud and stubborn, and they paid no attention to your commands.They refused to obey and did not remember the miracles you had done for them. Instead, they became stubborn and appointed a leader to take them back to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love. You did not abandon them,even when they made an idol shaped like a calf and said,‘ This is your god who brought you out of Egypt!’ They committed terrible blasphemies.“ But in your great mercy you did not abandon them to die in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud still led them forward by day, and the pillar of fire showed them the way through the night.You sent your good Spirit to instruct them, and you did not stop giving them manna from heaven or water for their thirst.For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell!“ Then you helped our ancestors conquer kingdoms and nations, and you placed your people in every corner of the land. They took over the land of King Sihon of Heshbon and the land of King Og of Bashan.You made their descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and brought them into the land you had promised to their ancestors.

The Lord spread a cloud above them as a covering and gave them a great fire to light the darkness.They asked for meat, and he sent them quail; he satisfied their hunger with manna— bread from heaven.He split open a rock, and water gushed out to form a river through the dry wasteland.

In the daytime he led them by a cloud, and all night by a pillar of fire.He split open the rocks in the wilderness to give them water, as from a gushing spring.He made streams pour from the rock, making the waters flow down like a river!Yet they kept on sinning against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.They stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they craved.They even spoke against God himself, saying,“ God can’t give us food in the wilderness.Yes, he can strike a rock so water gushes out, but he can’t give his people bread and meat.”When the Lord heard them, he was furious. The fire of his wrath burned against Jacob. Yes, his anger rose against Israel,for they did not believe God or trust him to care for them.But he commanded the skies to open; he opened the doors of heaven.He rained down manna for them to eat; he gave them bread from heaven.They ate the food of angels! God gave them all they could hold.He released the east wind in the heavens and guided the south wind by his mighty power.He rained down meat as thick as dust— birds as plentiful as the sand on the seashore!He caused the birds to fall within their camp and all around their tents.

Then the whole community of Israel set out from Elim and journeyed into the wilderness of Sin, between Elim and Mount Sinai. They arrived there on the fifteenth day of the second month, one month after leaving the land of Egypt.There, too, the whole community of Israel complained about Moses and Aaron.“ If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned.“ There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.”Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for you. Each day the people can go out and pick up as much food as they need for that day. I will test them in this to see whether or not they will follow my instructions.On the sixth day they will gather food, and when they prepare it, there will be twice as much as usual.”So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel,“ By evening you will realize it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt.In the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaints, which are against him, not against us. What have we done that you should complain about us?”Then Moses added,“ The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening and bread to satisfy you in the morning, for he has heard all your complaints against him. What have we done? Yes, your complaints are against the Lord, not against us.”Then Moses said to Aaron,“ Announce this to the entire community of Israel:‘ Present yourselves before the Lord, for he has heard your complaining.’”And as Aaron spoke to the whole community of Israel, they looked out toward the wilderness. There they could see the awesome glory of the Lord in the cloud.Then the Lord said to Moses,“ I have heard the Israelites’ complaints. Now tell them,‘ In the evening you will have meat to eat, and in the morning you will have all the bread you want. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’”That evening vast numbers of quail flew in and covered the camp. And the next morning the area around the camp was wet with dew.When the dew evaporated, a flaky substance as fine as frost blanketed the ground.The Israelites were puzzled when they saw it.“ What is it?” they asked each other. They had no idea what it was. And Moses told them,“ It is the food the Lord has given you to eat.These are the Lord’s instructions: Each household should gather as much as it needs. Pick up two quarts for each person in your tent.”So the people of Israel did as they were told. Some gathered a lot, some only a little.

I can’t carry all these people by myself! The load is far too heavy!
