“ Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, And all the remnant of the house of Israel, Who have been upheld by Me from birth, Who have been carried from the womb:Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.

In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the Angel of His Presence saved them; In His love and in His pity He redeemed them; And He bore them and carried them All the days of old.

Now for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness.

So Moses said to the Lord,“ Why have You afflicted Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have laid the burden of all these people on me?Did I conceive all these people? Did I beget them, that You should say to me,‘ Carry them in your bosom, as a guardian carries a nursing child,’ to the land which You swore to their fathers?

‘ You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.

“ I taught Ephraim to walk, Taking them by their arms; But they did not know that I healed them.I drew them with gentle cords, With bands of love, And I was to them as those who take the yoke from their neck. I stooped and fed them.

“ He found him in a desert land And in the wasteland, a howling wilderness; He encircled him, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye.As an eagle stirs up its nest, Hovers over its young, Spreading out its wings, taking them up, Carrying them on its wings,So the Lord alone led him, And there was no foreign god with him.

He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.

Moreover You led them by day with a cloudy pillar, And by night with a pillar of fire, To give them light on the road Which they should travel.“ You came down also on Mount Sinai, And spoke with them from heaven, And gave them just ordinances and true laws, Good statutes and commandments.You made known to them Your holy Sabbath, And commanded them precepts, statutes and laws, By the hand of Moses Your servant.You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger, And brought them water out of the rock for their thirst, And told them to go in to possess the land Which You had sworn to give them.“ But they and our fathers acted proudly, Hardened their necks, And did not heed Your commandments.They refused to obey, And they were not mindful of Your wonders That You did among them. But they hardened their necks, And in their rebellion They appointed a leader To return to their bondage. But You are God, Ready to pardon, Gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, Abundant in kindness, And did not forsake them.“ Even when they made a molded calf for themselves, And said,‘ This is your god That brought you up out of Egypt,’ And worked great provocations,Yet in Your manifold mercies You did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day, To lead them on the road; Nor the pillar of fire by night, To show them light, And the way they should go.You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, And did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, And gave them water for their thirst.Forty years You sustained them in the wilderness; They lacked nothing; Their clothes did not wear out And their feet did not swell.“ Moreover You gave them kingdoms and nations, And divided them into districts. So they took possession of the land of Sihon, The land of the king of Heshbon, And the land of Og king of Bashan.You also multiplied their children as the stars of heaven, And brought them into the land Which You had told their fathers To go in and possess.

He spread a cloud for a covering, And fire to give light in the night.The people asked, and He brought quail, And satisfied them with the bread of heaven.He opened the rock, and water gushed out; It ran in the dry places like a river.

In the daytime also He led them with the cloud, And all the night with a light of fire.He split the rocks in the wilderness, And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.He also brought streams out of the rock, And caused waters to run down like rivers.But they sinned even more against Him By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.And they tested God in their heart By asking for the food of their fancy.Yes, they spoke against God: They said,“ Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?Behold, He struck the rock, So that the waters gushed out, And the streams overflowed. Can He give bread also? Can He provide meat for His people?”Therefore the Lord heard this and was furious; So a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also came up against Israel,Because they did not believe in God, And did not trust in His salvation.Yet He had commanded the clouds above, And opened the doors of heaven,Had rained down manna on them to eat, And given them of the bread of heaven.Men ate angels’ food; He sent them food to the full.He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens; And by His power He brought in the south wind.He also rained meat on them like the dust, Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas;And He let them fall in the midst of their camp, All around their dwellings.

And they journeyed from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they departed from the land of Egypt.Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.And the children of Israel said to them,“ Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not.And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”Then Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel,“ At evening you shall know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt.And in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord; for He hears your complaints against the Lord. But what are we, that you complain against us?”Also Moses said,“ This shall be seen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to the full; for the Lord hears your complaints which you make against Him. And what are we? Your complaints are not against us but against the Lord.”Then Moses spoke to Aaron,“ Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel,‘ Come near before the Lord, for He has heard your complaints.’”Now it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying,‘ At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”So it was that quail came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp.And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground.So when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another,“ What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them,“ This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.This is the thing which the Lord has commanded:‘ Let every man gather it according to each one’s need, one omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let every man take for those who are in his tent.’”Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less.

I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me.
