You also saw how the Lord your God brought you through the desert. He carried you everywhere you went, just as a father carries his son. And now you have arrived here.”

By day the pillar of cloud did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take.You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.“ You gave them kingdoms and nations, allotting to them even the remotest frontiers. They took over the country of Sihon king of Heshbon and the country of Og king of Bashan.You made their children as numerous as the stars in the sky, and you brought them into the land that you told their parents to enter and possess. He spread out a cloud as a covering, and a fire to give light at night.They asked, and he brought them quail; he fed them well with the bread of heaven.He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed like a river in the desert. (niv)

He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them water as abundant as the seas;he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.They spoke against God; they said,“ Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”When the Lord heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel,for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens;he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.Human beings ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.He let loose the east wind from the heavens and by his power made the south wind blow.He rained meat down on them like dust, birds like sand on the seashore.He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents. The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt.In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.The Israelites said to them,“ If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”Then the Lord said to Moses,“ I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites,“ In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt,and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?”Moses also said,“ You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”Then Moses told Aaron,“ Say to the entire Israelite community,‘ Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’”While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the Lord appearing in the cloud.The Lord said to Moses,“ I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them,‘ At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’”That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor.When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other,“ What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them,“ It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.This is what the Lord has commanded:‘ Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.’”The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. (niv)

I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. (niv)
