and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”

You also saw how the Lord your God brought you through the desert. He carried you everywhere you went, just as a father carries his son. And now you have arrived here.”

And you saw how the Lord your God cared for you all along the way as you traveled through the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child. Now he has brought you to this place.’

And you saw in the wilderness how the LORD your God carried you as a man carries his son all along the way you traveled until you reached this place.

“ Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from before your birth, carried from the womb;even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.

Moses said to the Lord,“ Why have you dealt ill with your servant? And why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me?Did I conceive all this people? Did I give them birth, that you should say to me,‘ Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing child,’ to the land that you swore to give their fathers?

‘ You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.

Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk; I took them up by their arms, but they did not know that I healed them.I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them.

“ He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions,the Lord alone guided him, no foreign god was with him.

He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.

By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go.You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments,and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant.You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and you told them to go in to possess the land that you had sworn to give them.“ But they and our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments.They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them.Even when they had made for themselves a golden calf and said,‘ This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed great blasphemies,you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud to lead them in the way did not depart from them by day, nor the pillar of fire by night to light for them the way by which they should go.You gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst.Forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.“ And you gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner. So they took possession of the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan.You multiplied their children as the stars of heaven, and you brought them into the land that you had told their fathers to enter and possess.

He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night.They asked, and he brought quail, and gave them bread from heaven in abundance.He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed through the desert like a river.

In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light.He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.He made streams come out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers.Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved.They spoke against God, saying,“ Can God spread a table in the wilderness?He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?”Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob; his anger rose against Israel,because they did not believe in God and did not trust his saving power.Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven,and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven.Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance.He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind;he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas;he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings.

They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt.And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness,and the people of Israel said to them,“ Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.”So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel,“ At evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt,and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against the Lord. For what are we, that you grumble against us?”And Moses said,“ When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him— what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the Lord.”Then Moses said to Aaron,“ Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel,‘ Come near before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’”And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.And the Lord said to Moses,“ I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them,‘ At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp.And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground.When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another,“ What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them,“ It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.This is what the Lord has commanded:‘ Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer, according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.’”And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less.

I am not able to carry all this people alone; the burden is too heavy for me.
