  • Exodus 15:1-27
Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying:“ I will sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted; The horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea.The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.The Lord is a warrior; The Lord is His name.Pharaoh’s chariots and his army He has thrown into the sea; And the choicest of his officers are drowned in the Red Sea.The waters cover them; They went down into the depths like a stone.Your right hand, Lord, is majestic in power; Your right hand, Lord, destroys the enemy. And in the greatness of Your excellence You overthrow those who rise up against You; You send out Your burning anger, and it consumes them like chaff. At the blast of Your nostrils the waters were piled up, The flowing waters stood up like a heap; The depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.The enemy said,‘ I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoils; I shall be satisfied against them; I will draw my sword, my hand will destroy them.’You blew with Your wind, the sea covered them; They sank like lead in the mighty waters.Who is like You among the gods, Lord? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders? You reached out with Your right hand, The earth swallowed them.In Your faithfulness You have led the people whom You have redeemed; In Your strength You have guided them to Your holy habitation. The peoples have heard, they tremble; Anguish has gripped the inhabitants of Philistia. Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified; The leaders of Moab, trembling grips them; All the inhabitants of Canaan have despaired.Terror and dread fall upon them; By the greatness of Your arm they are motionless as stone, Until Your people pass over, Lord, Until the people pass over whom You have purchased. You will bring them and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance, The place, Lord, which You have made as Your dwelling, The sanctuary, Lord, which Your hands have established. The Lord shall reign forever and ever.”For the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, and the Lord brought back the waters of the sea on them, but the sons of Israel walked on dry land through the midst of the sea.Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took the tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. And Miriam answered them,“ Sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted; The horse and his rider He has hurled into the sea.”Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, because they were bitter; for that reason it was named Marah. So the people grumbled at Moses, saying,“ What are we to drink?”Then he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet. There He made for them a statute and regulation, and there He tested them. And He said,“ If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and listen to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the Lord, am your healer.”Then they came to Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters.

  • Exodus 7:1-25
Then the Lord said to Moses,“ See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet. As for you, you shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall speak to Pharaoh that he let the sons of Israel go out of his land. But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, so that I may multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt. When Pharaoh does not listen to you, I will lay My hand on Egypt and bring out My armies, My people the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt by great judgments. Then the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I extend My hand over Egypt and bring out the sons of Israel from their midst.”So Moses and Aaron did this; as the Lord commanded them, so they did.And Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty three, when they spoke to Pharaoh. Now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,“ When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying,‘ Work a miracle,’ then you shall say to Aaron,‘ Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, so that it may turn into a serpent.’ ”So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and so they did, just as the Lord had commanded; and Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his servants, and it turned into a serpent. Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers, and they too, the soothsayer priests of Egypt, did the same with their secret arts. For each one threw down his staff, and they turned into serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed their staffs.Yet Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had said. Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn; he refuses to let the people go.Go to Pharaoh in the morning just as he is going out to the water, and position yourself to meet him on the bank of the Nile; and you shall take in your hand the staff that was turned into a serpent. And you shall say to him,‘ The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying,“ Let My people go, so that they may serve Me in the wilderness. But behold, you have not listened up to now.”This is what the Lord says:“ By this you shall know that I am the Lord: behold, I am going to strike the water that is in the Nile with the staff that is in my hand, and it will be turned into blood. Then the fish that are in the Nile will die, the Nile will stink, and the Egyptians will no longer be able to drink water from the Nile.” ’ ”Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Say to Aaron,‘ Take your staff and extend your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their streams, over their pools, and over all their reservoirs of water, so that they may become blood; and there will be blood through all the land of Egypt, both in containers of wood and in containers of stone.’ ”So Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded. And he lifted up the staff and struck the water that was in the Nile in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants; and all the water that was in the Nile was turned into blood. Then the fish that were in the Nile died, and the Nile stank, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. And the blood was through all the land of Egypt. But the soothsayer priests of Egypt did the same with their secret arts; and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had said. Then Pharaoh turned and went into his house with no concern even for this.So all the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink, because they could not drink from the water of the Nile.Seven days passed after the Lord had struck the Nile.
  • Psalms 78:43-51
When He performed His signs in Egypt And His marvels in the field of Zoan,And turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, so that they could not drink. He sent swarms of flies among them that devoured them, And frogs that destroyed them.He also gave their crops to the grasshopper And the product of their labor to the locust. He destroyed their vines with hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost. He also turned their cattle over to the hailstones, And their herds to bolts of lightning. He sent His burning anger upon them, Fury and indignation and trouble, A band of destroying angels. He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their souls from death, But turned their lives over to the plague,And struck all the firstborn in Egypt, The first and best of their vigor in the tents of Ham.
