“ Hear, Israel! You are crossing the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, cities that are great and fortified to heaven,a people who are great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said,‘ Who can stand against the sons of Anak?’

Nevertheless, the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And indeed, we saw the descendants of Anak there!Amalek is living in the land of the Negev, the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites are living in the hill country, and the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.”Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said,“ We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will certainly prevail over it.”But the men who had gone up with him said,“ We are not able to go up against the people, because they are too strong for us.”So they brought a bad report of the land which they had spied out to the sons of Israel, saying,“ The land through which we have gone to spy out is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are people of great stature.We also saw the Nephilim there( the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

Then David’s men swore to him, saying,“ You shall not go out again with us to battle, so that you do not extinguish the lamp of Israel.”Now it came about after this that there was war again with the Philistines at Gob; then Sibbecai the Hushathite struck and killed Saph, who was among the descendants of the giant.And there was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.And there was war at Gath again, where there was a man of great stature who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty four in number; and he also had been born to the giant.When he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David’s brother, struck and killed him.These four were born to the giant at Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

Then they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had promised; and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.

There were no Anakim left in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod some remained.

And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.

Nevertheless my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt with fear; but I followed the Lord my God fully.

Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified; The leaders of Moab, trembling grips them; All the inhabitants of Canaan have despaired.

When we heard these reports, our hearts melted and no courage remained in anyone any longer because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth below.

Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every human heart will melt.

And they said to Joshua,“ The Lord has indeed handed over to us all the land; furthermore, all the inhabitants of the land have despaired because of us.”

and said to the men,“ I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have despaired because of you.

And when they say to you,‘ Why are you groaning?’ you shall say,‘ Because of the news, for it is coming; and every heart will melt, all hands will go limp, every spirit will be disheartened, and all knees will drip with water. Behold, it is coming and it will happen,’ declares the Lord God.”

Then the officers shall speak further to the people and say,‘ Who is the man that is afraid and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, so that he does not make his brothers’ hearts melt like his heart!’

So Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron( the name of Hebron was previously Kiriath arba); and they struck Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
