Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people[ is] greater and taller than we; the cities[ are] great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.

Where can we go? Our brothers have demoralized us with their report. They tell us,“ The people of the land are taller and more powerful than we are, and their towns are large, with walls rising high into the sky! We even saw giants there— the descendants of Anak!”’

Where can we go? Our brothers have made us lose heart, saying: The people are larger and taller than we are; the cities are large, fortified to the heavens. We also saw the descendants of the Anakim there.’

Where can we go up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, by saying,“ The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we saw the sons of the Anakim there.” ’

What is going to happen to us? Our brothers have drained away our courage by describing people who are more numerous and taller than we are, and great cities whose defenses appear to be as high as heaven itself! Moreover, they said they saw Anakites there.”

Hear, O Israel: Thou[ art] to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and[ of whom] thou hast heard[ say], Who can stand before the children of Anak!

Nevertheless the people[ be] strong that dwell in the land, and the cities[ are] walled,[ and] very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they[ are] stronger than we.And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it,[ is] a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it[ are] men of a great stature.And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak,[ which come] of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which[ was] of the sons of the giant.And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew[ the brother of] Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear[ was] like a weaver’s beam.And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of[ great] stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him.These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.

And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.

Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.

Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

And as soon as we had heard[ these things], our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he[ is] God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man’s heart shall melt:

And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.

And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

And it shall be, when they say unto thee, Wherefore sighest thou? that thou shalt answer, For the tidings; because it cometh: and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak[ as] water: behold, it cometh, and shall be brought to pass, saith the Lord GOD.

And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man[ is there that is] fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron:( now the name of Hebron before[ was] Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
