Where can we go? Our brothers have demoralized us with their report. They tell us,“ The people of the land are taller and more powerful than we are, and their towns are large, with walls rising high into the sky! We even saw giants there— the descendants of Anak!”’

Where can we go? Our brothers have made us lose heart, saying: The people are larger and taller than we are; the cities are large, fortified to the heavens. We also saw the descendants of the Anakim there.’

Where can we go up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, by saying,“ The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we saw the sons of the Anakim there.” ’

Where can we go up? Our brethren have discouraged our hearts, saying,“ The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.”’

Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky.The people are strong and tall— Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said:“ Who can stand up against the Anakites?” (niv)

But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there.The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.”Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said,“ We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”But the men who had gone up with him said,“ We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said,“ The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.We saw the Nephilim there( the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” (niv)

And Ishbi- Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels and who was armed with a new sword, said he would kill David.But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, saying,“ Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished.”In the course of time, there was another battle with the Philistines, at Gob. At that time Sibbekai the Hushathite killed Saph, one of the descendants of Rapha.In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jair the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver’s rod.In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot— twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha.When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimeah, David’s brother, killed him.These four were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men. As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak. (niv)

No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod did any survive. (niv)

From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites— Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the sons of Anak. (niv)

but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. (niv)

The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, the people of Canaan will melt away; (niv)

They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron( formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. (niv)
