他們上去、窺探了那地，從尋的曠野到利合，向着哈馬口那方向。他們取道南地上去，來到希伯崙；在那裏有亞衲人的後代亞希幔、示篩、撻買。（這希伯崙之建造比埃及的鎖安還早七年。）他們來到以實各谷；從那裏砍了一根枝子，上頭有一掛葡萄，須要兩個人用杠抬着。他們還帶了些石榴和無花果來。為了以色列人從那裏砍下來的那掛葡萄，那地方才叫做以實各谷。窺探那地過了四十天，他們就回來。來到巴蘭曠野的加低斯、見摩西、亞倫和以色列人全會眾，向他們和全會眾報告，又把那地的果子給他們看。他們向摩西敘說：『我們到了你所打發我們去的那地，果然是流奶與蜜的；這就是它的果子。

於是嫩的兒子約書亞從什亭暗暗打發兩個人做偵探，說：『你們去察看那地、尤其是耶利哥。』二人就去，來到一個廟妓女、名叫喇合的、家裏，就在那裏住宿。有人告訴耶利哥王說：『注意吧，今天夜裏有以色列人來到這裏，要偵察這地呢。』
