So I turned my attention to the Lord God to implore him by prayer and requests, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.

我禁食衣麻蒙灰、向主天主祈禱懇求、

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.

So I prayed to the Lord God. I begged him. I made many appeals to him. I didn’t eat anything. I put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. And I sat down in ashes.

Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

So confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great effectiveness.Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and there was no rain on the land for three years and six months!Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land sprouted with a harvest.

When I heard these things I sat down abruptly, crying and mourning for several days. I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.Then I said,“ Please, O LORD God of heaven, great and awesome God, who keeps his loving covenant with those who love him and obey his commandments,may your ear be attentive and your eyes be open to hear the prayer of your servant that I am praying to you today throughout both day and night on behalf of your servants the Israelites. I am confessing the sins of the Israelites that we have committed against you– both I myself and my family have sinned.We have behaved corruptly against you, not obeying the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments that you commanded your servant Moses.Please recall the word you commanded your servant Moses:‘ If you act unfaithfully, I will scatter you among the nations.But if you repent and obey my commandments and do them, then even if your dispersed people are in the most remote location, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen for my name to reside.’They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your mighty strength and by your powerful hand.Please, O Lord, listen attentively to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants who take pleasure in showing respect to your name. Grant your servant success today and show compassion to me in the presence of this man.” Now I was cupbearer for the king.

At the time of the evening offering I got up from my self-abasement, with my tunic and robe torn, and then dropped to my knees and spread my hands to the LORD my God.

Then Ezra got up from in front of the temple of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he stayed there, he did not eat food or drink water, for he was in mourning over the infidelity of the exiles.

“ Go, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa and fast in my behalf. Don’t eat and don’t drink for three days, night or day. My female attendants and I will also fast in the same way. Afterward I will go to the king, even though it violates the law. If I perish, I perish!”

I called for a fast there by the Ahava Canal, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and seek from him a safe journey for us, our children, and all our property.

You will rise up and have compassion on Zion. For it is time to have mercy on her, for the appointed time has come.Indeed, your servants take delight in her stones, and feel compassion for the dust of her ruins.The nations will respect the reputation of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth will respect his splendor,when the LORD rebuilds Zion, and reveals his splendor,when he responds to the prayer of the destitute, and does not reject their request.

When Daniel realized that a written decree had been issued, he entered his home, where the windows in his upper room opened toward Jerusalem. Three times daily he was kneeling and offering prayers and thanks to his God just as he had been accustomed to do previously.

When they were sick, I wore sackcloth, and refrained from eating food.( If I am lying, may my prayers go unanswered!)

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat on ashes.He issued a proclamation and said,“ In Nineveh, by the decree of the king and his nobles: No human or animal, cattle or sheep, is to taste anything; they must not eat and they must not drink water.Every person and animal must put on sackcloth and must cry earnestly to God, and everyone must turn from their evil way of living and from the violence that they do.Who knows? Perhaps God might be willing to change his mind and relent and turn from his fierce anger so that we might not die.”

I weep and refrain from eating food, which causes others to insult me.I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me.

At that time the sovereign master, the LORD who commands armies, called for weeping and mourning, for shaved heads and sackcloth.

Cornelius replied,“ Four days ago at this very hour, at three o’clock in the afternoon, I was praying in my house, and suddenly a man in shining clothing stood before me

“ This is what the sovereign LORD says: I will allow the house of Israel to ask me to do this for them: I will multiply their people like sheep.

Now when Mordecai became aware of all that had been done, he tore his garments and put on sackcloth and ashes. He went out into the city, crying out in a loud and bitter voice.But he went no further than the king’s gate, for no one was permitted to enter the king’s gate clothed in sackcloth.Throughout each and every province where the king’s edict and law were announced there was considerable mourning among the Jews, along with fasting, weeping, and sorrow. Sackcloth and ashes were characteristic of many.

“ Yet even now,” the LORD says,“ return to me with all your heart– with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Tear your hearts, not just your garments!”

Get dressed and lament, you priests! Wail, you who minister at the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you servants of my God, because no one brings grain offerings or drink offerings to the temple of your God anymore.

She had lived as a widow since then for eighty- four years. She never left the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.

In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three whole weeks.I ate no choice food; no meat or wine came to my lips, nor did I anoint myself with oil until the end of those three weeks.

On the twenty-fourth day of this same month the Israelites assembled; they were fasting and wearing sackcloth, their heads covered with dust.

Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double- minded.Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter into mourning and your joy into despair.Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.
