And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

我禁食衣麻蒙灰、仰首禱告我主上帝、

我禁食衣麻蒙灰、向主天主祈禱懇求、

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.

So I prayed to the Lord God. I begged him. I made many appeals to him. I didn’t eat anything. I put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. And I sat down in ashes.

Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and fasting. I also wore rough burlap and sprinkled myself with ashes.

For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.And ye shall seek me, and find[ me], when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned[ certain] days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned.We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying,[ If] ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:But[ if] ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven,[ yet] will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.Now these[ are] thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.

And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,

Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and[ when] he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away.

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which[ is] not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

Thou shalt arise,[ and] have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof.So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.When the LORD shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing[ was] sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered[ him] with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.And he caused[ it] to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that[ is] in their hands.Who can tell[ if] God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

When I wept,[ and chastened] my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

And in that day did the Lord GOD of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:

And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will yet[ for] this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do[ it] for them; I will increase them with men like a flock.

When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;And came even before the king’s gate: for none[ might] enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.And in every province, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came,[ there was] great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye[ even] to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.

And she[ was] a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served[ God] with fastings and prayers night and day.

In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse[ your] hands,[ ye] sinners; and purify[ your] hearts,[ ye] double minded.Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and[ your] joy to heaviness.Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
