in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years.

In that year I learned from the Scriptures that Jerusalem would remain destroyed for 70 years. That was what the Lord had told Jeremiah the prophet.

in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number of years that, according to the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet, must pass before the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years.

“耶和華這樣說：‘為巴比倫所定的七十年滿了以後，我必眷顧你們，向你們實行我滿有恩惠的諾言，把你們帶回這地方來。

這樣，就應驗了耶和華藉耶利米所說的話：直到這地享滿了安息，因為這地在荒涼的日子，就享安息，直到滿了七十年。

“你要告訴這地的人民和祭司說：‘這七十年來，你們在五月和七月禁食哀哭，豈是真的為我禁食呢？

這地要全變為荒廢，令人驚駭；這些國家要服事巴比倫王七十年。“七十年滿了以後，我要按著他們的罪孽懲罰巴比倫王和那國，就是迦勒底人之地，使它永遠荒涼。”這是耶和華的宣告。

波斯王古列元年，耶和華為要應驗他藉耶利米的口所說的話，就激動波斯王古列的心靈，使他通令全國，傳達文告說：

讀這書上預言的人，和那些聽見這預言並且遵守書中記載的人，都是有福的！因為時候近了。

我們還有先知的話，是更確實的。你們要特別注意它，好像注意照在暗處的明燈，直到天將破曉，晨星在你們心裡出現的時候。最要緊的，你們應當知道：聖經所有的預言，都不是先知自己的見解，因為預言不是出於人意的，而是人受聖靈的感動，說出從神而來的話。

論到這救恩，那預言你們要得恩典的眾先知，都尋求考察過，就是把他們心裡基督的靈所預先見證，關於基督要受苦難後來得榮耀，是在甚麼時候和怎樣的情況加以考察。他們蒙了啟示，為這些事效力，並不是為自己，而是為你們。現在，藉著傳福音給你們的人，靠著從天上差來的聖靈，把這些事傳給了你們；甚至天使也很想詳細察看這些事。

並且知道自己從小就明白聖經，這聖經能夠使你有智慧，可以因信基督耶穌得著救恩。全部聖經都是神所默示的，在教訓、責備、矯正和公義的訓練各方面，都是有益的，為要使屬神的人裝備好，可以完成各樣的善工。

所以，為你們的緣故，錫安必像被耕種的田地，耶路撒冷必變為亂堆，這殿的山要成為叢林中的高岡。

神啊！外族人侵入你的產業，污穢了你的聖殿，使耶路撒冷成為廢墟。（本節在《馬索拉文本》包括細字標題）他們把你僕人的屍首，給空中的飛鳥啄食；把你聖民的肉，給地上的野獸吞噬。

我但以理看見了這異象以後，就想明白它的意義；忽然有一位外貌像人的，站在我面前。我又聽見從烏萊河兩岸之間，有人的聲音呼叫著說：“加百列啊！你要使這人明白這異象。”

“在猶大王希西家的日子，摩利沙人彌迦對猶大的眾民說預言：‘萬軍之耶和華這樣說：錫安要像田地被耕犁，耶路撒冷必成為廢墟，這殿的山必變為雜樹叢生的高岡。’

從前人煙稠密的城中，現在怎麼竟然孤獨地坐在那裡。從前在列國中為大的，現在怎麼竟然像個寡婦。從前在眾省份中為王后的，現在怎麼竟然成了奴隸。

混亂的城破毀了，各家關門閉戶，使人不得進入。有人在街上因無酒呼喊；一切喜樂都已過去，地上的喜樂都消逝了。城門所剩下的只有荒涼，城門被撞得粉碎。

我就必使這殿像示羅一樣，使這城成為地上列國咒詛的對象。’”

太監對腓利說：“請問先知這話是指誰說的？指他自己呢？還是指別人？”

我比我所有的老師明智，因為我默想你的法度。我比老年人更明理，因為我遵守你的訓詞。

“當你們看見但以理先知所說的‘那造成荒涼的可憎者’，站在聖地的時候（讀者必須領悟），

包括耶路撒冷、猶大的城鎮，和她的君王、領袖，使這些城鎮荒廢，成為令人驚駭、被人嗤笑、咒罵的對象，好像今天一樣。

那時，我必在猶大的城市中和耶路撒冷的街道上，使歡欣和快樂的聲音、新郎和新婦的聲音止息，因為這地必要變為荒場。”

你的聖城變了曠野，錫安成了曠野，耶路撒冷成了荒場。

在我來以前，你要專心宣讀聖經、勸勉和教導。

你的法度是我的喜樂，是我的謀士。

於是我說：“主啊，這要到幾時為止呢？”他回答說：“直到城鎮荒涼，無人居住；房屋空置無人，地土廢棄荒涼。耶和華要把人遷到遠方，在這境內必有很多被撇下的地土。

“當你們看見‘那造成荒涼的可憎者’，站在不該站的地方（讀者必須領悟），那時，住在猶太的應當逃到山上；

列國都要服事他和他的兒子、孫子，直到他本國遭報的時候來到；那時，許多國家和大君王都要奴役他。

求你舉步去看那些長久荒涼的地方，去看仇敵在聖所裡所行的一切惡事。你的敵人在敬拜你的聚會中吼叫，他們豎起了自己的旗幟為記號。他們好像那些舉起斧子，在樹林中砍伐樹木的人。聖殿中的一切雕刻，他們都用斧子和銃子打碎了。他們用火把你的聖所燒成焦土，他們褻瀆你名的居所。
