在古代，上帝曾借着先知以各种方式多次向我们的祖先说话；

耶和华借着祂的众先知和先见警告以色列人和犹大人说：“你们要离开恶道，遵守我的诫命和律例，即我吩咐你们祖先遵守并借着我的仆人——众先知传给你们的律法。”但他们充耳不闻，像他们祖先一样顽固不化，不信靠他们的上帝耶和华，拒绝遵守祂的律例和祂与他们祖先所立的约，无视祂的警告。他们随从虚无的偶像，自己也变得虚无。他们违背耶和华的命令，去效法周围的外族人。

你降临在西奈山，从天上与他们说话，赐给他们公正的典章、信实的律法、美好的律例和诫命。你使他们知道你的神圣安息日，借你仆人摩西赐给他们诫命、律例和法度。他们饿了，你赐下天粮给他们吃；他们渴了，你使磐石流出水给他们喝。你吩咐他们去占领你起誓赐给他们的土地。但我们的祖先行事狂傲，顽固不化，不肯听从你的诫命。他们拒绝听从，忘记了你为他们所行的奇事，顽固不化，自立首领要回埃及做奴隶。但你是乐意饶恕，有恩典，有怜悯，不轻易发怒，充满慈爱的上帝，你没有离弃他们。
