後來，有一位樣子像人的用手摸我的嘴唇，我便開口對站在我面前的說：「我主啊，因為這異象，我痛苦不堪，毫無氣力。

我看見公山羊憤怒地頂向公綿羊，攻擊牠，折斷了牠的雙角。公綿羊無力抵擋，被撞倒在地，踐踏在腳下，無人能救牠脫離公山羊的威力。

我在異象中看見自己在以攔省的書珊城，又看見自己站在烏萊河畔。

我聽說你有神明的靈，有灼見、悟性和非凡的智慧。

王賜但以理高官及許多貴重的禮物，派他治理巴比倫全省，管理巴比倫所有的智者。王又應允但以理的請求，派沙得拉、米煞和亞伯尼歌負責巴比倫省的事務。但以理仍在朝中供職。

總督之上，設三個總長，以維護王的統治，但以理是其中之一。因為但以理有非凡的心智，遠超過其他總長和總督，王便考慮讓他治理全國。
