Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea.

Four large animals came up out of the sea. Each one was different from the others.

Then I stood on the sand of the sea. I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads. On his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads, blasphemous names.

‘ These great animals, which are four, are four kings, who will arise out of the earth.

“ The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings. I watched until its wings were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made to stand on two feet as a man. A man’s heart was given to it.“ Behold, there was another animal, a second, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth. They said this to it:‘ Arise! Devour much flesh!’“ After this I saw, and behold, another, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird. The animal also had four heads; and dominion was given to it.“ After this I saw in the night visions, and, behold, there was a fourth animal, awesome and powerful, and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth. It devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet. It was different from all the animals that were before it. It had ten horns.“ I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots: and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Again I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and behold, four chariots came out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of bronze.In the first chariot were red horses; in the second chariot black horses;in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot dappled horses, all of them powerful.Then I asked the angel who talked with me,“ What are these, my lord?”The angel answered me,“ These are the four winds of the sky, which go out from standing before the Lord of all the earth.The one with the black horses goes out toward the north country; and the white went out after them; and the dappled went out toward the south country.”The strong went out, and sought to go that they might walk back and forth through the earth: and he said,“ Go around and through the earth!” So they walked back and forth through the earth.Then he called to me, and spoke to me, saying,“ Behold, those who go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.”

As for this image, its head was of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze,its legs of iron, its feet part of iron, and part of clay.

Glorious are you, and excellent, more than mountains of game.
